The ability for plants to develop adventitious roots along the stem.

In lilies, stem rooting varieties will form roots along the stem above the bulb but under the soil surface. The lilies receive most of the nutrients from these stem roots.

In Marigolds, stem roots help anchor plants, and can be used to plant leggy plants deeper (up to first set of leaves). Roots wil then form along the stem.
