A deciduous tree that has moderately dense foliage during the summer, loses its leaves early in the fall, and a thin branch density. These trees are beneficial for energy conservation by shading structures in summer, while allowing the maximum amount of sunlight through their bare branches in winter for heating. Trees such as ash, Kentucky coffeetree and sugar maple are considered solar-friendly.
