An intense tropical cyclone with a well-defined circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher. Hurricane strength is rated from 1 (least intense) to 5 (most intense) on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Damage inflicted by hurricanes can range from minimal (tree branches broken, minor flooding) to catastrophic (large trees uprooted, plants defoliated, major flooding, structures destroyed).
