An abnormally high sensitivity to certain substances, such as pollens, foods, or microorganisms. The human body reacts by producing histamines. Allergic reactions may manifest as sneezing, itchy and/or watery eyes, skin rashes, and laboured breathing.
Plant pollen is a common culprit for allergies. Finer, wind-borne pollen from trees, grasses and weeds cause the most misery for allergy sufferers. The springtime release of airborne pollen, which causes considerable allergic reactions in certain individuals, is commonly called hay fayer. Heavier, insect-borne pollen from flowering plants is far less likely to cause a reaction.
