Fishtail refers to the leaflet shape of many palms having triangular leaflets. Caryota palms are called fishtail palms for this characteristic. Although many of these palms have leaflets of different shapes, they are all just varieties of the same basic triangular, or fishtail shape. Some Pytchosperma and Wallchia also have fishtail leaflets.
