A naturally-occuring mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, found in many cereal and grain crops, some spices and tree nuts. Aflatoxins are carcinogenic and toxic to animals and humans.

They occur most frequently occur when humidity levels are very high over an extended period of time, or the plants are stressed due to environmental conditions such as drought.
