A special type of wetland area, found in the northern hemisphere. Fens are fed by groundwater and characterized by neutral to alkaline pH, supporting a diverse ecosystem of grasses, sedges, wildflowers, and rushes. As peat forms, the buildup can eventually cut off the fen from its groundwater supply, and thus become a bog.
