Definition as written by Terry:

Literally half of a sphere. The Earth is often divided into hemispheres: the western hemisphere (west of the prime meridian) and eastern hemisphere (east of the prime meridian); or the northern hemisphere (north of the equator) and southern hemisphere (south of the equator.)

For gardeners, the northern and southern hemispheres pose the biggest seasonal differences: the southern hemisphere is exactly opposite the northern hemisphere. For example, the southern hemisphere\'s summer extends from December 21 to March 1, which is winter in the northern hemisphere.

Winter in the southern hemisphere begins June 21, the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere.
