A girdled plant is one whose growth has been restricted. It often occurs when a plant has been tied to a support or stake and the tie eventually cuts into the trunk or limbs. Other plants such as vines can sometimes girdle and strangle a plant.
Girdling creates many problems for the plant, including unsightly growth, disease and weakening and eventually death.
Prevention is the key to prevent girdling. Use proper techniques to support a plant and remember to loosen or remove them as the plant grows. Immediate care must be taken if signs of girdling appear.
