Grass or other plants, such as clover or alfalfa, cut and dried for fodder.

Hay has great insulation properties. Loose, it's often used to mulch plants and stabilize the soil temperatures around the plants.

Bales of hay arranged in a square and covered with a large sheet of glass or plastic can be used to construct a cold frame for plants.
