A digging hand tool with a flat blade set at right angles to the handle

Definition as written by Terry:

Mattocks come in a variety of sizes and weights. Larger ones may weigh several pounds and are great for gardeners with strong backs who can swing them with full force to dislodge or cut through large roots and heavy stones.

Smaller, lighter versions can be wielded more easily, and are good for breaking up tough soil in small spots, and hacking through tough roots up to several inches in diameter.
