Definition as written by Terry:

A six- or eight-foot length of steel, usually purchased already painted green or black. It can be bent to follow a curved bed, and has special dovetailed ends allowing it to be conjoined with other pieces at each end, and a matching stake driven through the pieces to secure it in the ground.

Often used in commercial and private gardens, it provides a clean, distinct line between the flower bed and the adjoining turf - downside: it tends to rust, especially when a weedeater nicks the rust-proof paint.
