Some plants have to ability to take nitrogen from the air and store it in their roots. Members of the legume family are the best for this. Some people plant clover or crown vetch just to plow under and gain the nitrogen benefits.

The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen to nitrogen compounds that can be utilised by plants, accomplished by nodule-forming bacteria on legume roots or by soil micro-organisms.
