Definition of nomenclature

Categorized under "General"

Definition as written by GrannyLois:

An international system of standardized New Latin names used in biology for kinds and groups of kinds of animals and plants.

Definition as written by Terry:

Nomenclature literally translated means "name call" (from the Latin words "nomen" and "calare").

In gardening, it most often refers to botanical nomenclature - a system of naming plants and animals developed by 18th century naturalist and botanist Carl von Linné. He is more commonly referred to as Linnaeus (the Latinized form of his name.) See also taxonomy.
