Definition as written by Terry:

This almanac was originally created in 1792 by Robert Bailey Thomas. It is still published annually with planting information, weather forecasts, and humorous anecdotes.

Definition as written by shakemh:

First published in 1818 as a forecaster of weather based on astrological events it is now published annually to include short stories, homespun wit and humor, good cooking, facts, weather forecasts, household tips, fishing calendars, and gardening tips esp. on the best astrological planting times. In this regard it might be likened to a gardening Ouija board.

The general consensus is that it makes for entertaining and informative soup-to-nuts reading while relaxing in a garden hammock or easy chair.
