Removing the new growth to encourage a plant to get bushier; or to postpone the blooming time (for example, mums are often pinched back so they don't bloom too early.)

Using thumb and forefinger to nip off the tips of branches, this basic pruning technique forces side growth, making the plant more compact and dense. It is especially useful with annuals, house plants and shrubs.
