Regular pruning back to the main stem or trunk to force a flush of new growth; usually used on fast-growing trees and bushes. See also pollard

Pollarding is regularly done to plane (a relative of the sycamore) trees lining streets and boulevards in France. It is also done in formal gardens in France to create very controlled and uniform growth.
