The first name is the Genus and is always capitalized. The second name is the species and is always lower case. A third name is optional; when it appears it is the variety or cultivar, and is capitalized with single quotation marks.
This systematic naming and classifying of plants (and animals) was developed by Carl von Linné, an 18th century Swiss botanist and naturalist who published several works on his classification method including Systema Naturae, Fundmenta Botanica, and Classes plantarum.
In recognition of his contribution to taxonomy Linné's name has been latinized to Linnaeus; some references list him as Carolus Linnaeus; others as Carl Linnaeus; he is often referred to as the father of taxonomy
