Historically used by citrus growers when cold weather or insects threaten the fruit crops. These pots were strategically placed throughout the grove and a fire started in the bottom. Even though there isn't a tremendous amount of heat produced, the smoke created could effectively protect the fruit from frost (or insects).
The smoke became an environmental concern, and by the 1970s, most growers had stopped using them.
