The dry surface of soil, which - if too dry - can prevent small seedlings from penetrating as they germinate. Care should be taken to properly cultivate and water the soil surface before and after planting, to keep the soil crust as thin as possible.
Soil with a high content of clay is most prone to the development of a crust. Extensive hot, dry weather can cause the crust to crack in scale-like pattern.
