Categorized under "General" Definition as written by Terry: A method of intensive gardening, in raised beds using organic methods, popularized by a book written by Mel Bartholomew in the 1980s.
Square foot gardening uses beds that are 4 feet x 4 feet or 16 square feet. Within that area, plants are grown close together, often on a 16 square grid (hence the name "square foot gardening") with the goal to produce the largest possible harvest from small backyard gardens.
