Since pinnate means leaflets coming off a central rachis in a somewhat feather-like pattern, binnate refers leaflets arrising of the \'secondary petioles\' also in a feather-like pattern. This is a Caryota leaf showing a binnate pattern- this is the only genus of palms that is bipinnate- all the rest are either pinnate, palmate or some \'hybrid\' of the two.
