My first order - through no fault of their own - arrived frozen. Obviously the shipping carriers left it out in the snow some place. I sent pictures to Cross Country and the replaced the whole shipment at no additional charge.
The plants arrived today, good size, healthy and in great conditions. One of the nice things they do is email tracking numbers as soon as it ships. Other web/mail order companies do not necessarily do this.
All in all a very positive experience. | | Positive | vnolton (1 review) | On May 23, 2007, vnolton Gloucester, VA wrote: After failing many times with trying to get Bhut Jolokia seeds to germinate (I'm really a newbie gardener), my friend told me about his Bhut plant that he ordered from ChilePlants.com . I went and checked it out, they had a 12 plant minimum order, so I ordered 2 Bhut jolokia and a bunch of other peppers. Who couldn't resist with over 500 kinds! They arrived on my birthday in wonderful condition, I followed the instructions and then planted them all up. I had a problem with 1 plant, and it was quickly resolved, a replacement was sent ,and it is doing great! A+++ I will order again, can't wait for the fresh chiles to start shipping. | | Positive | Joan (31 reviews) | On May 22, 2007, Joan Belfield, ND (Zone 4a) wrote:This is my first year ordering from this company, but it won't be my last. When I went looking for someplace to order different chilies and tomatoes than I can buy locally I found this company. I was hesitant to order at first, because I thought they were a little high priced and I had to order so many.
Now that I've received the plants though, they are very much worth the price paid. Very healthy and sturdy. | | Negative | JERZEGIRL10 (1 review) | On May 10, 2007, JERZEGIRL10 Princeton Junction, NJ wrote: I have been ordering chili plants through the Cross Country mail order for about 5 years now. I have always been very happy with the quality of the product. This year, I decided to take the hour drive to visit the nursery in person. Maybe it was a bad day at the nursery but as soon as I stepped foot in the office, I was greeted by a very negative and abrupt women named Janie, who as far as I know, is one of the owners. I tried to ask her some advice and information about the chilis. She just pointed me towards the greenhouse and told me whatever I need was in there. I proceeded to pick out my plants and returned to the office upon completion. I inquired about a certain chili that I couldnt find and she told me that they are in alphabetical order and if they were in, I would find them. I was aware they are in alphabetical, that was quite obvious. What I wanted to know was if they would be getting them in so that I could come get some at a future date. She angrily said she didnt know and when I asked if there was anyone who might know, she just gave me flat out "no". I was shocked that the owner of such a beautiful nursery would be so negative and nasty and not even know her own product. I proceeded to pay for my plants with my Visa because I saw the Visa symbol on the counter. Janie would not let me pay with my Visa because it was a Visa debit card. The card cleary has a Visa symbol on it and it can be used as either a debit or a credit card. Janie would not back down and argued with me adamantly about this. I felt extremely hurt and embarrassed that I was put through this experience. I did call my Visa card and filed a complaint. I will say that this company does have great plants but the customer service is horrible! Due to this experience, I will be finding a new nursery next year. I will suggest to anyone ou there that if they still want to do business with Cross Country Nurseries, dont go directly there. Order them through the mail so that you dont have to put up with the same abuse and negativity that I had to endure. | | Positive | mariposa8929 (3 reviews) | On November 6, 2006, mariposa8929 Alexandria, VA wrote: I ordered 12 chile and tomato plants this spring, and all arrived in excellent condition and turned into thriving plants. They have a great variety of plants to choose from and great resources/information.

My colleague and I ordered 12 plants between us, a good mix between tomatoes and chillis. He is an organic gardener with 20+ years experience, and I am a city dweller with a large roofdeck garden. We were both astounded at the quality of the arriving plants, they were healthy, strong and exhibited vitality. These plants have clearly been carefully and lovingly raised. The packaging was meticulous, each plant in it's individual pot with sufficient moist soil and all leaves in perfect shape and intact.
We laid them on a window ledge in the office to rest for a few days before taking them home and they are doing very well indeed.
Neither he, nor I will hesitate to order again next season. In fact we are waiting with anticipation for this company to start shipping their other plants which are currently only available for local pick up. I know they are planning on doing so.

He decided he wanted to become emperor. So I did a search and found Cross Country Nurseries. Their web site was easy to use for a slug like me. Any questions I had were promptly answered. I ordered around 100 chile and tomatoe plants. Well that was 1/2006. Cross Country asked when I wanted them shippped and that my credit card would not be billed until 5 days before shipment. My shipment date was 4/03/06. Between 1/06 and4/06. I added to my order changed my email. Not one problem. Then on 4/03/06 I received an email from ups my order had been shipped. On 4/05/06. I watched as my ups man pulled up( I was riding could not greet him) and dropped my box of plants on the porch. Well not only does Cross Country Nurseries live up to their customer service, they also know how to pack a box. Over 100 plants arrived alive and looking more beautiful than I could have started myself. Remember these plants traveled from NJ to GA. The cost of shipping was minimal. The price of each plant was cheaper than I could get locally. And the selection was out of this world. I really can not say enough about Cross Country Nurseries. It's hard to send 400.00 to a place you don't know for products you don't know what you'll receive. But, I can say I was not let down one bit. Now I must go do alittle work for my husband my be the new emperor of chile peppers. I am the staff that does the work. I was really bummed:( | | Positive | Ripley7700 (5 reviews) | On January 10, 2006, Ripley7700 Tomball, TX wrote: I ordered 24 different pepper plant transplants from this company in spring 2005, as two separate orders. On the whole, this company is outstanding - if you want variety but don't have the time or space to grow your own seedlings, this is definitely the place to order. These peppers survived our hot summers and most are still producing peppers (in January!), even though my area has had a couple of light freezes already. Although I would not hesitate to order from this company again, I do have a couple of "beware" comments - (1) even though they represent that only transplants that are ready to be transplanted will be sent, I received one that was extremely small with a delicate/underdeveloped root system in my first order that was dubious when transplanted. When I contacted the company, their response was basically "well, it was too young to be transplanted." So why did you send it? Fortunately, the transplant survived. (2) Although the packaging is fairly good, they don't wrap the plastic containers, so you stand a good chance of having the containers arrive with missing soil and/or plant name markers. I had several plants in my second shipment that I couldn't identify until they set pods. (3) I had one transplant suffer obvious transportation shock - it arrived as basically a stick with a bunch of dead leaves and never amounted to much more than that - I didn't ask for a refund. But these are the worst things I can say about this company - it's definitely worth the money. | | Positive | Damian32693 (7 reviews) | On January 2, 2006, Damian32693 Roslyn, NY wrote: I ordered quite a few chile pepper plants and all were spectacular! Plants were received in excellent condition. Packaging was incredibly strong with no disturbance of soil and not a damaged leaf (>100 plants of 17 varieties). Plants were erect with great color. All plants grew with vigor throughout the year. There was no wilt even in 100+ degree heatwaves. After frost when the plants were removed exceptionally heavy root systems were revealed which no doubt aided the plants in this respect to sustain the high transpiration rates of the summer. Plants were totally disease and insect free which is important to me in protecting my other plants and soil. Collected three large harvests across all varieties plus several smaller early and late harvests. Some plants like the Purira, a very hot variety, grew to a height of six feet. Not excess foliage but heavy fruit bearing branches.
This makes seven years of excellent results. I am certain to do more business with CCN next year to insure predictable results. | | Positive | pkgdir1 (1 review) | On September 7, 2005, pkgdir1 Easton, PA wrote: My first experience this year with Janie and Fernando and I have to tell you I could not be happier. I'd wanted to order New Mexico green chiles from a place in NM, but the only mail order place I could find was sold out. This place is from Jersey, but they carry the same (and more!) varieties. | | Positive | HerbalMD (1 review) | On May 16, 2005, HerbalMD Chesapeake, VA (Zone 8a) wrote: I ordered a bunch of chile plants from Cross Country Nurseries. Let me tell you-they were/are the healthiest, most vigorous chile plants (and plants in general) I have ever purchased and received by mail order! The plants were far superior in quality than even "top quality" plants sold at local premier garden centers and nurseries. I was very happy to see that the plants are grown strictly organic and you can tell when you receive your plants. When I received my plants by UPS and opened the box, I couldn't beleive how healthy the chile plants were and how carefully they were packed. There was no damage to the plants -big plus. When checking the plants for aphids or other pests before introducing to my greenhouse, I found no pests or fungus of any kind-just this factor alone gets a high score! The customer service was two thumbs way up!! (To the owner-Thanks Janie for all your help) The selection was very large and the descriptions and photos were very helpful! The plants are thriving in my greenhouse and will definately and happily order from Cross Country Nurseries again and again! I will share my great and pleasing experience with friends and fellow gardeners.

Each spring I anxiously await the arrival of my new 'babies', and year after year they arrive looking wonderful.
I'm frugal by necessity and I must admit that I had to ponder long and hard that first year, wondering if I would be satisfied with plants that I hadn't picked out myself. As soon as I received my babies I realized I had made a wise choice. If I were to drive to my local garden center and could find Hawaiian Sweet Hot Chile Peppers, and other unusual varieties, I would inevitably damage them at least a bit by transporting them to my house in my vehicle with my three children. It amazes me every year that there isn't so much as a bent leaf from Cross Country. The young tender plants arrive in their transport carrier absolutely flawless. After a rest and a quick drink and they are full of life. I transplant them to bigger pots a few weeks later, then out into the garden about mid June, when the nights are finally warm enough not to disrupt flower setting. I've had plants arrive with blooms that don't drop, but actually fruit before I transplant to my garden.
Through the years I've ordered small lots, now totaling nearly 100 plants and have never lost a plant, not just in shipping, but throughout the growing season. My neighbors thought I was crazy the first few years, wheeling my red wagon filled with plants outside during the day and back inside during the cool Washington nights. I think they still call me the crazy pepper lady, but they line up in my yard and ask for peppers at the first signs of ripening pods.
I am impressed with the quality of the plants from Cross Country Nurseries, the attention to customer support that Janie provides, and their awesome online encyclopedia of pepper information with pictures. A truly magical combination that will keep this crazy pepper lady happy year after year.

Consistent improvements on their website has made it easier and easier to shop for and purchase their plants and products - they really know how to make it work for their customers!
In all the years of doing business with them and literally hundreds of plants I have ordered from them, only ONE plant ever arrived in poor condition. That plant was immediately replaced by Cross Country and their advice about how the resucue the ailing plant actually helped pull it through.

Then to my surprise the order arrived ontime....and in super packing materal that enabled you to get them unpacked with out any hassel or damage...And the plants were in super condition...Much better than most of the plants I have seen locally..
Even though we are in south Texas i deceided to plant in buckets so that I could put indoors the few weeks that we get cold so that I could have them going good all year round. Especially the Boonie Plants. These are raised in Guam which has a tropical climent and they bloom all year round.
The plants have all done exceptionally well (I do not have a green thumb) and all are thriving and producing...The regular pepper plants have put out fruit twice now and all the fruit they have produced have been large and perfect...no defects or runts...
The link below is the album of the plants when they arrived in April and a pic of them today.
Would deal with this company forever....Excelent Product and Above Excelent Customer Service.
Wish more internet and infact Brick and morter companies were as good as this one.

It is obvious from the pristine condition of the Chile plants on their arrival that CCN truly cares about the work they do. I ordered 24 plants, about 12 different varieties of sweet peppers and chiles; and they arrived exactly when I was told to expect them. The plants were packed in a simple yet clever cardboard six pack that held them steady, yet gently in place, and there was no stress evident at all. CCN gives instructions on handling from arrival to planting, and I like the fact that they are users of seaweed fertilizers as opposed to commercially manufactured fertilizers. | | Positive | blackboarx (1 review) | On May 21, 2004, blackboarx wrote: I have been ordering chile plants from Cross Country Nurseries for five or six years. The soil in the pots is moist and properly contained. The packaging is triple reinforced and sturdy to avoid crushing. The plants are always strong, well developed, wonderful color and vigorous. I have never received a damaged plant. In fact, there has never been a damaged leaf. Within a hour of unpackaging the plants are upright and vibrant. Much as Janie CCN recommends. I transplant to 4" pots, water with fishoil-phosphorous solution and give increasing amounts of light. In two or so weeks I transplant out. There is never any shock or stunting and I gain two months on the short PA growing season. I get three large harvests consistently. I have grown 50 of the 500 varieties offered.
