"I've been gardening for most of my life. My father was such a dedicated rose-grower that his hobby became the rest of the family's chore and when he and my mother divorced, she dug up all his roses and planted trees. After moving away from home and having gardens of my own, it was years before I planted a rose bush!
Six years ago, I moved back home from Texas, to take care of my ailing mother and had to learn gardening all over again. Her trees had matured, and I had had a sunny zone 8 garden in Texas. Three years later I married and my husband and I bought an older home with a mature yard -- here that means lots of trees and shrubs, so I'm now a shade gardener. There are a few spots with enough sun for those roses I now want to grow, but not many!
Though father turned me off on growing roses for many years, he did teach me to love plants. I have a Master's degree in Botany and work in the seed industry. Studying botany, I learned "how plants grow"; I'm still learning "how to grow plants"!
