"I am an apartment balcony gardener who is just now expanding beyond basil. To my friends I am the basil growing queen, as I have about 8 years experience with growing, propogating, drying, cooking with, and using that herb.
I am also trying to do everything on very little money since, until next year, I am a starving student who lives paycheck-to-paycheck in order to pay my college tuition, books, room, and board.
In fact, it was that exact reason that had me branching out to trying to grow tomatoes this year (a failed experiment, but I learned a lot) so that I could keep the money I would otherwise spend on them.
So far, I haven't spent a cent on basil seeds or soil. I use sifted compost that comes from generous FreeCyclers to line my pots, and my basil stock plants have been thinnings that I was given by my friends (one of whom I have given cuttings back to two times over now).
I really like to trade seeds and mail-hardy plants since it fits in well with my budget!
Next year I will be a high school science teacher and I'm already developing lesson plans that put to use what I'm learning from my gardening. I figure that if you get kids started on botany at a young enough age, they might just become the next set of Master Gardeners."
