Protea - The 115 species in this outstanding genus of evergreen shrubs and small trees from Africa are prized for their flowerheads, especially by the cut flower industry. Most species grow 3-10' tall. The characteristic cone-shaped flowerheads have a dense central mass of hairy flowers surrounded by brightly colored bracts. These range from yellow to red, crimson, pink, orange, silver or white, and flowering usually extends over several months. The leathery green leaves often have hairy or undulating margins.
Cultivation - Often difficult to grow, proteas prefer an open, sunny position with light, usually acidic, well-drained soil. They can cope with occasional light frosts, but young planats need protecton during their first two winters. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and to promote new growth. Propgate from seed or cuttings in summer, or by grafting or budding.
