I like the Time Life series of gardening books. They were inspiration for a beginner and still serve as a good source of plant identification as well as information. This book is no exception.
This is a set of 20 some books with separate volumes covering everything from Annuals to Water Gardening. Each volume has an introductory section on its subject, a "How to Grow" chapter, and an illustrated encyclopedia of that subject. Each volume also includes both general references, charts, and lists, as well as ones specific to the subject of a given volume.
