This is a good, broad-spectrum book that's small enough to take out on a hike or to a nursery; it measures 11 cm wide x 14 cm high and 4cm thick. Like most of Dorling Kindersley (DK)'s books, it's filled with gorgeous, clear colour photos, and detailed descriptions.
Over 3000 recommended trees, shrubs, climbers, bulbs, perennials, annuals & biennials are listed. Each page lists two plants, each with its own colour photo, a short paragraph describing its characteristics, plus cultivation info, sun/water requirements, zone tolerance and height. There's also a "Planting Guide" at the back, covering about 60 different gardening situations/desires, with two pages of plants listed for each situation - eg: "Container Plants for Autumn", "Variegated Herbaceous Plants", "Architectural Plants", "Deer Resistant Plants", "Plants for Dry Shade", "Plants That Withstand Salt" (a must in most Canadian cities!), etc. etc. Also includes a Canadian plant hardiness map.
Very well-organized, completely relevant to Canada.
Highly Recommended!
