It is a woody plant bible for the serious gardener. I purchased the book 5 years ago and hardly a day passes that I don't make reference to it. A very postive feature is that the book gives the hardiness ratings in the USDA zone rating AND the CDA (Canadian Dept. Agriculture) zone rating (slightly different from the USDA). The book also gives categorized listings of woody plant suitability for various growing conditions, uses and/or ornamental value e.g. woody plants for salt, pollution, xeric conditions, etc; plants with fragrant flowers, ornamental fruit, purple foliage, yellow foliage, etc. It also gives general cultural information. The only bad thing that I can comment upon is that the book gives size characteristics of a given plant, in general terms e.g. it is a large shrub, it is a medium-sized tree. Despite this, I still find the book excellent and highly recommend it be included in any gardeners library. |
