In my favorite five or so gardening books. It's in the "inspiration" category for me, one of those books that you may put down after re-reading a chapter because it's just inspired you to go out in the garden and play.

It discusses a variety of topics like planning the garden, several chapters on arrangement and plant choices for borders, annuals, decorating the garden, seasons, and so on. It's thoroughly accessible for a new gardener, but still lots of fun after you've gotten more experience - rather like a _really good_ long conversation about gardening with another gardener.
