I knew little about apples when I set about picking an apple tree for my yard. I wasn't even sure if I liked apples, because I formed my opinions of them in the Deep South where most apple trees do not grow well and where apples purchased at grocery stores weren't very good.
Mr. Manhart writes a lengthy description of the history and growth habits of each apple he reviews. He notes the peculiarities of each tree. He explains root stocks for apples.
From this book I learned how to pick an apple tree for size, climate, taste, and desired use. I learned the apple you like the best may not do well in your part of the country.
Mr. Manhart's ratings of apples for flavor is extremely useful.
