I found this book to be very informative. I had little knowledge of orchid taxonomy prior to reading it, but it was easy enough to understand and the explanations were plain enough for a novice in the genus to figure out.
It does a wonderful job of explaining the various Masdevallia species and the meaning behind their names, as well as culture information.
My favorite part of the book is the appendix that gives a list of registered Masdevallia hybrids with the parentage, hybridizer and registration year.
If you are looking for a great book on the genus Masdevallia, then you wouldn't be disappointed in this one. If you are looking for a more comprehensive book that encompasses more of the Orchidaceae family, then this isn't what you are looking for.
Excellent book. Gives a guide to taxonomy, a 'representative collection' of good species (both new and well known), as well as an excellent review of hybrids. Slight criticisms for the lack of dividing the species into the various divisions and being slightly behind in taxonomy isn't at all important to most growers of these beautiful, challenging, addictive orchids.
