I'm not sure if this book is available new anymore, but it can be purchased used at Amazon.com for prices starting at $1.00.
It's a great reference book for the beginning gardener. While it doesn't cover each topic in depth, it does give the basic information for a broad variety topics.
This book touches on climate and weather to determine safe planting dates; soil types and soil pH; gardening techniques including growing from seed, planting nursery stock, and various types of propagation.
Annuals, perennials, bulbs, roses, foliage plants, trees, shrubs, lawn grasses, roses, vines, herbs, fruits and vegetables, and container gardens are all discussed.
Even though my first impression of this book wasn't favorable, I read through it anyway, and found that I learned quite a few things, as well as remembering some of the basics that I had forgotten.
I think this is a perfect book for a first time gardener that can't afford to spend lots of money on several reference books. This one is certainly worth paying a couple dollars for used, and will answer many questions and give you the basics on a lot of different topics.
