Dirr's first chapter is a necessary lesson in nomenclature and taxonomy that is a tough go for those not wanting to go back to school, but the facing page illustration by Bonnie Dirr made it more than palatable. He then dives right into the heart of the matter for the gardener wanting to choose a Viburnum, by precisely describing each species and it's cultivars. The good and the bad of each are clearly defined and he discusses issues of appropriateness of each for all zones.. He has a sense of humor, a fluid writing style and he is relentlessly honest in his opinions and enthusiasms. The book is a visual delight with the inclusion of Bonnie Dirr's exceptional botanical art throughout, as well as the insertion of the countless (424) stunning photographs by Michael Dirr that are spot on for each plant being described. This superb book also includes chapters on breeding, care, and propagation. It is exceptional work that will be invaluable for any Viburnum lover, be it the professional or the amateur. A must for the an gardeners Life Library of botanical books. |
