This book is a valuable resource for the clematis grower. It is not an encyclopedia covering hundreds of varieties with a glossy photo of each variety, but limits itself to 150 varieties suitable for smaller spaces. Most entries give ideas for where to plant and with what companions to help highlight that particular variety. While there is not a photo for each and every variety, there are still lots of photos (150 photos according to the inside flap of the book itself), most showing more than just a single flower glamor shot and some with other types of plants as companions. It is inevitable that the author has included many of the varieties that he has bred, since the focus is on long blooming and shorter growing vines that can fit in smaller spots and in pots; but approximately two-thirds of the highlighted varieties were bred and/or introduced by others.
