It is a very nice book which spends a lot of time explaining the origin of many species lilies. The book is mainly useful for dedicated collectors of lilies who are interested in the various species. The photos are georgeous, but too few in my opinion.
The book does contain information on growing culture and propagation, but overall very little space and details are dedicated to this portion which this takes second place to the descriptions of the various species and their origin.
A more appropriate title would have been: a broad reference guide for the dedicated lily collector. A good reference book for the collector but probably not a good bet for the average grower. The beginner should not buy this book.

For a better alternative for most lily lovers, I recommend this book instead:
Lilies, by Pamela McGeorge

This is a comprehensvie guide to lily varieties, propogation techniques, and the history of hybridization. A useful book that could be used by general gardeners or professional horticulturalists.
