The world of bedding plants did not stand still during the few years which passed between the first publication of this book and the writing of this edition. Scores of new types appeared and hundreds of new varieties were introduced. At the same time some older ones disappeared from the popular catalogues. Changes have not been restricted to new types and varieties -- the idea of buying seedlings and growing them on before planting out has become much more popular and the range of plants on offer in this way has increased.
These changes in the bedding plant scene make it more necessary than ever to have a clear definition of a 'bedding plant' and that is not easy. Everyone thinsk they know what a bedding plant is, but nobody has come up with a definition with which everyone agrees.
