I picked this book up last year, when I was looking for ideas for my garden. It has lots of photographs, and tips for choosing and caring for your plants. This is a nice general encyclopedia of plants with both the common, and latin names listed. I highly recommend this book.
This was the first book I was given when I started to love gardening. It is 799 pages long and includes almost any topic a beginning gardener can think of: perennials, annuals, climbers, cacti/succulents, bulbs, shrubs, palms, herbs, orchids, etc-- it has a section on each, having a page or more on each plant in the category listed alphabetically.
I spent hours reading this book and still use it as a reference for identifying and learning plant characteristics.
I would not however, recommend this book to a seasoned gardener. Due to its broad scope of information, it somewhat lacks detail on specific plant species, and has almost no reference to specific cultivars and hybrids. Each category (shrubs, orchids, etc) does have moderately extensive information on propagatioin, pests/disease, and care.
Overall, as a broad reference to a novic gardener, this book is an excellent choice.
