As the name The Dry Garden implies, it has lots of interesting plants to create a garden that can look great even in a drought. Though specializing in cactus and succulents including a wide range of agaves, Richard Ward also carries a good inventory of bamboo and grasses, South African plants like protea and leucospermums, Australian plants like phormiums, caudiforms, a wide range of sedums, some begonias and even an amorphophallus or 2 among many others. I think anything that is different and interesting catches the owner's eye. I am always so entertained as I wander down this nursery's paths. From small to large, there is a wide range of plants.
He also has a section for trees. On a recent visit he had 7 foot Chorisia trees that have such incredible flowers and a Toona Sinensis with its so pink new leaves. There is also garden art tucked in here and there which are pieces that you will probably not see elsewhere. Towards the back there is a greenhouse full of smaller plants.
Also there is much to enjoy in his display plantings. You will see more than a few things that will catch your fancy. On a recent visit I spied a bamboo NOT FOR SALE that I have since been dreaming about.
As you might have figured out, I really like this nursery. Due to my frequent nursery travels, it gets harder and harder to keep me amused for long in a nursery and so far this one always does. |

This purveyor of succulents, subtropicals, bamboo, perennials, shrubs and trees pairs his horticultural finds with handcrafted art from local and Indonesian artisans.
If you are looking for a unique Indonesian garden lantern or a Mark Bullwinkle sculpture to place next to a Cannomois virgata , you will most likely find it at The Dry Garden. |
