As a member of the society that cares for the rose garden at this park, I can honestly say that your experience here will be dependent on the time of year and the maintenance currently being done. For instance, last spring, the park was absolutely GORGEOUS when the roses and irises were in bloom. Shortly thereafter, the daylilies kicked in. During these times, it's hard to find a lovelier spot in all of Baton Rouge. However, as the weather turns from pleasant to downright hot, it's harder for the Iris Society, the Daylily Society, the Water Garden Society and the Rose Society to get volunteers to come out and work the gardens... and they become a bit less tidy. By the end of summer, the garden isn't nearly as lovely... but when the fall garden show plans get underway, the garden is again revived with lots of volunteers and effort. Additionally, there are new display gardens being constructed by the BREC park service... and depending on the schedule for this construction, you might catch the beds fully planted or under renovation. During this time of transition, it's best to plan your visit during mid spring or very early summer for best display, or come during early fall (assuming we don't have another Gustav, which caused quite a bit of damage in the garden).
