While I found the employees very friendly and helpful, I'm afraid I had a negative experience with the product quality at this nursery. We moved to the area in late June of 2007 and I was thrilled to find a nursery within 1/2 mile of my new home. I elected to container garden for the first summer and purchased a bit pricey but nice looking pre-potted arrangement. Being a bit green yet (no pun intended), I did not think to closely examine the plant before buying it. BIG mistake. I got the plant home and discovered it was covered with aphids! I have never experienced that kind of poor quality before--foolishly I did not return the plant, but isolated it and sprayed the devil out of it. Am I being naive to expect better quality control at the nursery or is it buyer beware?

I just bought my house last year and Phelan Gardens is about a mile away. I went there to get my "dream" tree, a weeping Norway Spruce. There were only 3 trees to choose from, I paid for my tree and I paid to have Phelan plant it for me to get their 1-yr guarantee. The tree was tagged and the appointment made to plant it, but the Phelan garden person came without the tree! To make a long story short, I found out that it's common for plants that are PRE-purchased and waiting delivery to be stripped of their tags and often the plants disappear before they can be delivered. Since the person who helped me was the owner I am not impressed with their customer service. (I was able to get the tree I chose a couple of days before, but the Phelan person had to go back to the nursery and he brought back all the weeping Norway spruce that were on the lot so I could choose mine again!)Personally I have had to find someone to help me every time I go there for plants, and I've only gone there for specialty plants I can't find at the local Home Depot, etc. Once I find a person to help they often can't answer my questions. I agree that the plants are overpriced. I've gardened on both coasts and it's my opinion that the plants (perennials, shrubs & trees are what I've bought) are the worse-looking plants I've seen at any nursery. However, they grow well once they are planted, just don't expect to find a nice-looking, pretty full plant from Phelan! Compared to other places I've lived their selection is the most limited I've seen as well.

Phelan has always had very good selection and REALLY helpful staff. They are kind, knowledgable and always offer great information (it doesn't have to be pried out of them)! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I think their prices are somewhat high. However, obviously I keep going back for the selection and kindness....so I think it's worth it!
