I ordered a "Yellow Crown" herbaceous peony from Gardens by Olivia (GBO) on May 18, 2004 for $85.00 and it was shipped eight days later. I was expecting that the order would be held until the late summer which is when most herbaceous peonies are dug and shipped , but it was shipped in full leaf, bare root despite the season.

The plant arrived within four days, and was packaged fairly well in moist paper towels around the root with plastic wrap rubber banded around the towels. Crushed newspaper was used to pad the interior of the box. The leaves of the peony were quite wilted and were somewhat battered and torn from the shipping, but the root seemed in good shape.

The reason I am giving GBO a negative rating is because I was concerned about the condition of the plant when it arrived, the off-season timing for shipping the plant bare root, and then the lack of GBO standing behind its product.

I contacted GBO by email immediately after receiving the plant to express my concerns and to see what suggestions she might have regarding the culture and care of the plant. I also asked what her business' refund/replacement policy was and was told that when the plants are shipped they are healthy stock and since she has no control over the care once they are shipped they are the buyer's responsibility.

I was told the peony may need to be cut back completely and that it may go dormant until spring. I guess at this point I'll have to just wait and see if it does come back in the spring, but from the way it's withered away and probably not stored much energy in the roots I'm highly skeptical it will come back at all. I also feel 9+ months is a very long time to wait to see if the plant has survived.

I really dislike having to leave negative comments of any kind, but I thought other gardeners might benefit from my mistake and could avoid a similar one in the future. I was surprised by GBO's policies and lack of response to my concerns.

I ordered iris roots via ebay and added to my order. Nice selection of colors though roots were on the small side. Only 1/2 of them bloomed this year, but I expect to see them all bloom next year.

Purchased 3 plants via ebay. 1 red stem taro and 2 asarum maximum ling ling gingers. All were described as gallon sized plants. I received 2 very small "plug" sized asarums and the taro was more like a 4" pot size. When I emailed concerning this I was told by olivia to "Shop elsewhere".

Also had a shipping problem. They were suppose to be shipped on 6/30 but were not shipped until 7/9 at my insistance. She stated they were shipped on 6/30 but must be "Lost".

I'd like to come back and change this to a positive but doesn't seem that Olivia is willing to make good on the "Gallon size" plants I paid for.

I purchased plants from this company via e-Bay thoughout late Winter. They kept track of my winning purchases, adjusted shipping costs, and shipped at my request in mid May. I received the order last week. All were well packaged, well labeled and are very nice, large, healthy plants. I would order from her again.

I ordered some black millet, which was advertised as "growing in 1-gallon pots, shipped bare root," $6.
For $18 (plus shipping) I got 7 small plants, tightly wrapped in plastic. Of that number, three have survived; the rest shriveled and died. Ironically, two days after receiving these plants that were marginal at best, the Wal-Mart garden center had them by the hundreds, nice healthy plants growing in 6-inch pots, $1.92 each.
On April 19th, 2003, hbbrandon changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following:

Although I didn't request it, when I advised them of the situation, they replaced the entire order. These plants were much better. They checked back via e-mail to determine that the replacements had arrived and were acceptable.
