Just received my order ... exactly on time. The item is smaller than I thought it would be but is healthy with a big, moist root ball. The fact that I was able to change my order at the very last minute (entirely my fault and responsibility) was remarkable and greatly appreciated. The BEST in customer service and follow-through.

What a wonderful experience! I ordered from Klehm's because of the reviews here. I e-mailed for advice on selecting a tree peony and despite it being the high season for them, got a very nice and knowledgeable reply within 24 hours. This was followed by an extremely helpful and friendly phone call when I placed my order, part of which was a gift. My plants came when they said they would packed so incredibly well! At first I thought $22 for shipping was high (particularly considering they aren't too far from me), but they shipped the plants in two separate boxes and the packaging was an engineering feat. The tree peony is stunning and has a wonderful fat bud on it, which is great because it's a gift. The two echinacea I ordered are just coming out of dormancy but they look like nice big plants. I'll be back to Klehm's!

I ordered 3 items. 1 hosta, 1 mini/dwarf conifer, and 1 shrub. This was my first order with Klehm's, and more than likely will be my last. What I received in the mail, in regard to the shrub and conifer, was a joke. The hosta had a really nice sized root system, so I can not complain about that. The conifer is about the size of a small cell phone, and the shrub looks brittle and half dead, I checked the root system to make sure it was viable, the roots aren't that great looking, but are viable. Also, there is some sort of worm looking thing in the conifer dirt, as well as the shrubs dirt. I'm hoping these are baby earthworms, and not some root destroying nematode. I will be bringing a sample to the county extension office to check this out, and will be holding these plants in a quarantine space until I do find out. For all the hype about Klehm's, this transaction leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. If, big IF, I ever order from them again, it will be what they are really known for, daylilies and peonies. I'll definitely not be ordering any trees/shrubs or conifers from them ever again. I can order the same thing through FF, or other nurseries, with expensive shipping, and receive better plant material.
Customer Satisfaction: Bad
Plant material: Laughable at best-The hosta is to be commended.
Except for DL's or Peonies, I'll never order from Klehm's again.

I will remain neutral until the company does, what it said it will do. After emailing/calling the company I was able to speak with them. I work night shift, 11p-7a, and it's sometimes difficult to reach people during "normal" busy hours, due to the nature of my sleep schedule. I finally was contacted by a representative of Klehm's, Erica was her name, and she informed me nicely that it shouldn't, almost couldn't be nematodes in the soil that I saw, due to their small size. I'm in a MG class, the woman who taught our Entymology class was teaching the class I was at on Monday, she said a quick test for the suspicion of nematodes, is that they die within minutes with contact of air, which these did. She also couldn't discern whether or not these were the bad nematodes, or good ones. And told me to air on the side of caution. I informed Erica of this, and she informed me that she will let the green house people know what I told her. She is crediting me for the Tsuga I ordered, and reshipping the Morus.
When the company actually makes good on their promise to me, I will change my rating to Positive.
The mini conifers do have a picture in their catalog next to a cell phone, and these mini conifers were grown more for pot culture than general landscape culture, I was not aware of this.
They will be resending the Morus when the plant leafs out at their nursery.

Not so with Klehms, they grow and look the same.

I will be ordering from Klehm's SongSparrow Perennials again this year after a very positive experience last spring. I hesitated to order from them initially because they were more expensive than some of the other mail order companies I had used. However, when their shipment arrived I was delighted. First, I have never had mail-order plants that were packaged as beautifully as these - every plant was wrapped securely in moisture-retentive packing and then placed in cardboard 'cages' that kept them secure in shipping. Instead of getting tiny wilted bareroot seedlings, the large healthy plants came in pots of soil and took off immediately in my garden. The selection is excellent as well.

Last week I emailed several questions to Klehm's. All responses were prompt and polite, though I did a lousy job of reading over the website and the answers were there all along. I placed my order Monday night, with a note that I would be out of town for a week in May, so please do not ship to me that week. I received a phone call Tuesday morning from Klehm's letting me know that they received my order and will ship the week after I return. They also told me that everything was in stock. I consider that to be great service! I hope that my order will be as great as their service. I ordered two conifers, two japanese maples, a magnolia, and a ginkgo. All are pretty hard to find varieties and expensive but I expect that the quality will be pretty high.

I received notification of shipping last week, and five days later the herbaceous roots arrived still slightly damp and fresh (the tree peonies arrived about two weeks ago, potted and in great shape). I might get more daylilies since a lot of the ones they have are exclusively theirs.

I ordered two magnolia virginiana 'Green Bay'. This is an excellent broadleaf evergreen that's hard to find -- in fact, Klehm's was the only place that seems to be selling it online right now. I was apprehensive about placing the order, because when I called, Klehm's told me the size of the tree could be anywhere from 18" to 3 feet. But I really wanted the trees so I took a chance and ordered. I was very happy when the trees arrived: they are each over 3 feet tall and healthy. The shippping is the same amount whether you order one plant or three plants, so small orders are penalized. Still, I was happy with my interactions with Klehm's on the phone (despite the lack of information on tree size!) and very satisfied with their plants.

I have a few things that I want to say about this company. They are a very good source for Herbaceous and Tree Peonies, daylilies and hard to find shrubs and Magnolias, at according to the catalog.
I had to have some of their Herbaceous Peonies and gave in and ordered 3 this winter, Snow Swan, Aurora Sunrise, and Pink Dogwood Whisperer, which just arrived early Sept. and I planted them all right away. Was not taking any chances. (I wondered if those plants that failed because the customers failed to plant them right away and don’t water enough or just bad luck). But I have to say that the sizes of the Peony roots are just huge and look very health and fresh. They were so well packed and still slight damp and in perfect conditions. We’ll see how they grow next. I didn't know that Klem’s has no replacments policies on dead plants, even if it was not your fault. Not sure how I feel about this since some of the are really expensive, such as the Tree Peonies.

They are a great company and I wished the shipping wasn’t so expensive.

On September 19th, 2006, beblue3333 added the following:

Actually, I have rethought my take on their not guaranteeing replacements due to other things beyond their control such as soil, weather, lack of care on the customers part.
I do know that customers can sometimes abuse the flexible returns policy and become careless if they know that a company will replace them no matter what.
But since Klem’s products are so healthy and huge and they take such great in packing that you can’t really fault them if a plant ends up dying.

Clematis from Song Sparrow
************************************
I bought my first Clematis (live plant), at my local nursery knowing nothing about this vine. The second season and after moving it twice, I purchased a bare root Rooguchi from an online company and planted it with the first. Year 2-3 went very well. Subsequently, I added an additional eight bare root Clematis purchased from 'other' well known suppliers. Of the eight that I purchased else where, three died and one took two seasons to show up.

This season, I bought live plants from Song Sparrow for only $5.00-$10.00 more than the bare root plants. They arrived when promised in superior packaging. I was extremely happy to receive live plants that were large, heathy, and ready to plant. They were much more established and healthy than I expected.

I didn't anticipate they would be actively growing and budding before I could get them to their spots and had to hurry to plant them. Much better than the previous supplier and well worth just a bit more.

P.S. I have frequented other nurseries and spent considerable $, however Song Sparrow has won additional loyalty for their consideration of including 'freebies'. (White tree peony, this time)

i called them and they said that on my order was a note written that i requested everything to be shipped in march??? and added that THEY noted that that was against their advise. now i have placed well over 30 orders for this season and i write down everything.....but i'm not going to argue with them. but.... i'm like NO i told you may and i have it written down with whom i spoke....which also happened to be the person i was speaking to at the moment. well....they did say that they would send call tags to me and the plants could be returned. after discussing this with a friend or two i was able to place the trees aka twigs in a nursery and was advised that just putting the echinacea in an area that will not get frost should be find. what would not be fine was that if i sent them back they would all die for sure on their journey...(which really i am at fault for not doing i didn't have to keep them...and that's why this is not a negative but neutral). well.....here it is in april....the twigs are twigs and i have lost thus far two of the echinacea...and suppose they will ALL be gone by may at this point. so....woe is me.

One tree peony that did not make it through our NH winter was replaced the following spring. I have ordered woody plants from them, and have always been satisfied. They have trees and shrubs that grow well for northern gardens, and some varieties that are not easy to find. Except for giving in to an occassional daylily or hosta- the perennials they offer are usually ones I can find in the better local nurseries....Basically, since I am a peony fan, I consider them one of the top speciality nurseries for peonies.

When my numerous plants arrived and I removed them from their half gallon pots it was more than obvious that these plants had very recently been transplanted into the half-gallon containers, as the rootball system fell away. It was obvious that these were in much, much smaller containers prior to shipping that a consumer pays a very hefty price for. Shipping was $21.00 for up to three plants, and an additional $2.55 for each additional plant.

I feel I was ripped off big time. Their prices are shipping are even more this year. Buyer beware!

And to top it all off, last year their catalogue was totally screwed up. the pict's did not coincide with the descriptions of the plant. Not good for a Company that receives such a high praise.
