The scoop on 'Caprice Farm Nursery'

I ordered three daylilies from this group in March. They sent me a confirmation e-mail that indicated that the plants would be shipped in April. Well, April has come and gone, as has most of May, and no further contact from this group. I have e-mailed them four times, indicating that I would like to hear back something, anything, but no response. Apparently the caprice in their name represents their desire to respond to complaints. If I'd been able to find these daylilies anywhere else, I'd have contested my credit card charge and told them to take a hike. This is definitely NOT the way to do business.

I ordered 3 peonies from Caprice Farms 4 years ago. One of them didn't do well and Caprice was very gracious in replacing it. All peonies are doing AMAZING and are ready to burst forth with 30+ blooms each this season. They are very healthy - I highly recommend this nursery!

Ordered 1 dozen of 4 varieties of peonies in fall of 2003. All looked healthy, and some of the varieties of plants were just huge! Some extras were given for the smaller plants. Good place to buy from if you want several plants of the same variety. Will be buying from again next year.

I was unhappy with my experience ordering hostas through this company. The order did not arrive when expected and the company did not respond to my emails or phone messages. I did finally make contact with them after leaving a message that I was going to have the credit card company get a return of my money. My order arrived some two months later than expected. They did give me an extra hosta for my trouble. Product was OK but prices rather high.

I ordered from them last December. A little bit poor customer service. I was surpised to receive order out of blue in the middle of February, fortunately we had mild winter in Alaska and nothing was frozen. May be they were watching the weather before shipping, however no order confirmation or scheduled shipping dates were proivided.

But the roots I received were GREAT (large, with several eyes) I had to plant them indoor and most of them bloomed in coupple weeks. If somebody is looking for peonies this nursery has excellent stock plants.

I recieved some very nice, large and healthy root divisions of peonies. Very pleased with the size and qty of eyes. Will definitely buy again!

Last summer I ordered from Caprice and their selections were 3 to 4 " high. I'm still babying 2 of them along. All were puny.

I too have Al Rogers' book "Peonies" (got it from Wayside). I recommend it. Although he's very generous to other nurseries in the book & it's in no way a promotion of his own, once you read the book, you'll want to do business with the author. The book has lots of information about peony culture & propagation, and lists all commercially available peonies & where to get them (apparently worldwide, apparently David Austin's nursery carries lots of peonies, something I didn't know). Some nice color plates, too. It's a big book already, but the only thing I wished for was more information about the peonies listed but not on his recommended list or peonies of the future list. One of the nicest things in the book is the author's recollection of first being entranced by a peony at age 7 when visiting a nursery, and how his parents noticed and bought the peony for him as a birthday present some months later. What great parents--I guess we have them to thank for both this nursery and the book!

I've both mail-ordered and bought directly at the nursery. Al Rogers has been generous with both his time and the quality of his plants. I have ordered peonies, daylilies and siberian iris. All arrived as large divisions and with generous bonus plants, even when I ordered with a gift certificate. One friend recently ordered a peony sampler of 5 plants for $50. Seven plants arrived instead of five because it was around christmas and Rick, Al's son, was feeling in the spirit of giving. Al has recently been published with an excellent book on peonies and I count on them to do the evaluation of plants so that when you order, you know you are getting something that is above the average and will do well in this area. I know that people order worldwide and they do much repeat business. I highly recommend Caprice Farms.
