I recently placed a small order for several packs of seeds. The order was confirmed instantly, I received a shipment within one week with one item on backorder and it was received two days later. The germination has been excellent and what really impressed me was the prices on some of the seed packages - they were less than half of the most popular seed companies. Harris Seeds does not carry a vast selection of flower varieties, but for some it's adequate. Shipping is reasonable also plus you may order from the growers site for large quantities. I have added Harris to my list of preferred companies along with Stokes, Swallowtail, and J.L. Hudson. On February 3rd, 2012, chunx added the following:
Received my yearly order of seeds again. I think this company is way underrated. They have a vast selection on their website (compared to their home catalog), their prices are competitive, fast shipping and confirmation, excellent germination. Never a problem! On May 19th, 2013, chunx added the following:
This has become my primary seed company now. Their prices are very competitive or often much lower and processing is same or next day. I have had stellar germination on all varieties of seeds I've ordered. So far I've placed two orders this year and I'm very pleased again.
Make sure you sign up for their emails and you get special offers such as free shipping and sale items. |
| Positive | RumRunner007 Milton, FL (3 reviews) January 21, 2013 | I ordered seeds from Harris. They arrived quickly.I will be ordering from them again.. |
| Positive | Lucille44 Friendswood, TX (5 reviews) May 12, 2012 | I ordered a large packet of sunflower seed. They arrived fast, and were packed in a resealable bag which is a good thing because I didn't use all of them. Plus, they send me their catalog, enabling me to buy many more seeds to help fill in my new garden.
My only recommendation: most companies I have dealt with send a confirmation to your email, when that didn't happen, I emailed the company to make sure they had got my order and they didn't respond. The seeds arrived in a few days anyway, but it would be nice to have responses. |
| Neutral | gourdobean Minden, NV (10 reviews) May 9, 2012 | Ordered a similar volume of seeds from Kitazawa and they arrived in excellent condition in a cardboard flat rate box ($5.25 shipping.) Harris seeds arrived the same day in a thin plastic envelope ($10.40 shipping.) Might be a great company but they need to put part of their high shipping charges into more substantial packaging to protect easily crushed and damaged seeds. |
| Positive | taufgardner American Fork, UT (20 reviews) March 8, 2012 | Perfect transaction. Seeds came quickly. I like the packaging - A LOT. Germination was terrific. I am getting the hang of growing seedlings in a new greenhouse and tried some more difficult varieties this year, which I ordered from Harris. Having wonderful results and will definitely order from them each year. |
| Positive | reeve1 Plano, TX (Zone 8b) (36 reviews) February 28, 2012 | I just had one of the best experiences I've ever had with any Nursery or Seed Company after placing a large order with Harris Seeds. One of the items I purchased was a grow light stand, which was made and shipped by another manufacturer. Harris kept me informed through the 2 week process and provided detailed shipping information so that I could track the order. They were very helpful and informative through the process and were kind and professional when responding to my inquiries. I did quite a lot of shopping around before choosing them to place my order and they were the cheapest of anyone. The Gerbera, Petunia and Zinnia seeds I ordered have all had over a 90% germination rate so far and the electronics I purchased were top notch quality and functioned well. I cannot remember when the least expensive company also provided the best service and had the best products. Ever!! They are truly a rare treasure. Thank you, Harris, for making the choice easy! I'll certainly be back again! |
| Positive | MrSteven Pinardville, NH (3 reviews) January 14, 2012 | I have, on several occasions, ordered a variety of different seeds from Harris Seeds and have always been pleased. Seeds are shipped promptly and bulbs at the correct time of year. The selection is great, although some varieties of seeds are only available in larger quantities and I feel guilty wasting seed.
I especially appreciate that they test the germination rate of seeds and label each packet with that information includes the germination rate and geographic origin of the seeds. Furthermore, where one batch of sage seeds had a relatively low germination rate they provided a second packet at no charge.
I do wish the website had a section that would allow customers to leave their own reviews, but that is a minor detail.
Finally, I want to give props to their seeds for the perennial Scabiosa Fama Deep Blue. They germinated quickly and with a near perfect germination rate. Furthermore, from seed, these perennials produced a few *gorgeous* blooms the first year. I cannot wait to see what they do next year. |
| Positive | DonnaMack Elgin, IL (Zone 5a) (47 reviews) July 23, 2011 | I don't know whether it is representative, but I ordered Heliotrope seeds from three companies. A couple of years back I tried to germinate some Harris Seed from 2004, along with seeds from two other companies that sent me fresher seeds. I got by far the best yields from Harris.
I decided to grow some more heliotrope, and noticed that I had that same old 2004 package of Harris Seeds. I also had some that was much fresher, but thought, what the heck, and applied moisture and heat. THREE days later, five of the 10 seeds have germinated. Heliotrope normally takes 7 to 14 days to germinate. The seeds are seven years old. I redid the others and got no results.
I intend to buy a lot more seed from them in the future. |

Have grown plants on the side to supplement my income for 15 years. Grow flowers for our landscaping, and have been gardening for 35 years.
This is the second time I've ordered from this company. They have the most variety. My first order was about 3 years ago. Ordered a mix of one variety. It was Vinca. When the seed grew, the mix was mostly one color. Emailed the company explaining the poor mix. A rep responded, but provided no help. Ordered from other companies with success the following years.
This year, due to colors and types I was seeking for my business, tried them again. This order was an easy and wave petunia sampler mix. Also ordered Delta pansies, which were great. The easy wave white petunia had low germination. In addition to the the few white, easy wave petunias that grew, other plants also grew resembling strawberries.
Emailed the company explaining my problem. A horticulturist emailed back, blaming me for using garden soil. I responded back that i used organic seedling mix. Set the seeds in the center of the cell so I could be exactly sure the seed planted was the type and color planted. He said he was concerned, but reached the conclusion that since no one else had a similar problem, it was my fault. How can taking seeds out a packet, planting them, and yielding strawberries be my fault. Somehow strawberry seeds were pelleted with the easy wave white and made it into the packet I purchased. If the truth is known, other people had the same result. This company does not have customer service, even when they send defective product that is their fault. It appears they don't care if their product meets expectations. All they had to do is send a new packet of easy wave white seeds. On May 10th, 2011, jerimiah74 changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:
I was contacted for replacement seed. My seed problem was rectified by a person from the company with customer service.
Realize all companies can have defective seed. The majority grow true to the packet. They do have the most variety that their compeititors can't match, thus, will, and was planning on ordering again even if they didn't replace the seed. |

I ordered several transplant samplers from Harris this year, and I'm delighted with how well they've done. I've never ordered anything like this before by mail (usually get my tomatoes, peppers and herbs from a local nursery), so I was a little skeptical, but when the plants arrived the plants were in excellent condition, and have thrived this summer. When I was placing my order, their customer service department was also very helpful in helping me to select appropriate squash seeds for our short growing season. I would recommend Harris to anyone who loves to grow flowers and veggies and appreciates good quality products at a fair price On April 4th, 2011, graciebelle added the following:
I recently purchased a new product from Harris called Worm Power. I bought it to use on my houseplants - all of which seemed to be suffering some late-winter blues. I got the stuff that you can use to create your own liquid fertilizer and was very impressed with the results - only a week or so later the plants were filled with blooms and new growth. As always, their customer service dept. was helpful in helping me to decide which type of Worm Power application would be best for my needs. Can't wait to try it in the garden this summer. |

I have been a customer for several years. I usually purchase live plants (both plugs and liners). I purchased 8 trays again this year and the plants arrived in great shape, every cell was full, and every plant survived the transplant. Plus the catalog, website, and customer service are all top in the industry. On March 21st, 2011, growerscott added the following:
Tired flower seed this year (historically focused on vegetable seed.) 1 flat of geranium and 1 flat of petunia. Both with 100% germination. 1 flat mixed with gomphrena, pennisetum, impatiens and all but 3 cells germinated. Total germination at 99%. awesome quality. |
| Positive | Mid12nt Stone Mountain, GA (9 reviews) March 12, 2011 | One of the very few companies to have the flower seed I wanted, and it was reasonably priced and quickly delivered. |
| Positive | aileen246 Priest River, ID (19 reviews) March 11, 2011 | Have ordered from Harris Seeds for a number of years, since I found they have pelleted carrot seeds. In addition to the carrot seeds, this year I ordered pelleted petunia and lobelia seeds. It is too early to plant the carrots but the flower seeds are up and doing well. |
| Positive | tharlan Greenleaf, KS (1 review) February 10, 2011 | I recently had occasion to check on the status of an order with Harris Seeds. I emailed the company and received a phone call explaining my order should have arrived. (It did arrive right after I emailed). I really appreciated the call to check with me. Very good service. I will certainly order from Harris again, I have never had anything but positive experiences with them. |
| Positive | Geoffrey_79 Gautier, MS (5 reviews) January 29, 2011 | ordered 300 hundred peat pots to get a jump start for this springs farmer's market. They sold them at a good price and the packaging was done up right so none of them were busted when they got here. |
| Positive | Farmerdill Augusta, GA (Zone 8a) (21 reviews) January 15, 2011 | Very fast with no backorders. They don't carry many of the varieties that I want, but what they do are delivered quickly. I am patience but I do appreciate when I don't get partial shipments with the rest backordered. |

A dwarf peach, 'Bonfire' was delivered on May 6th as ordered. It was shipped dormant, bare root and well packed. I was home when it arrived and immediately got it potted up. Unfortunately, on close inspection it is evident that the tree is dead. It has no live cambium above the graft, the branches are shriveled and desiccated and there has been absolutely no bud development. I immediately called customer service and asked for a refund or replacement and offered to ship the stock back at my expense for verification. The customer service representative said a 'manager' would call me back. I also emailed them on their web site explaining the problem and asking for a refund or replacement. I have not received any response to either the phone call or the email. I just checked the tree moments ago and it is absolutely dead. There are no signs of life at all, above or below the graft. It appears that this componay does not respond to customer complaints nor does it deliver quality nursery stock. On May 11th, 2010, snapple45 changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:
I received a telephone call this am (May 11, 2010) from a very pleasant company representative who has promised me a replacement tree. On May 14th, 2010, snapple45 added the following:
On May 13th I received the replacement tree, as promised. I was utterly speechless when unpacking it because it too was very obviously dead. In fact it was even more dried out than the first dead tree! I didn't immediately call the company. Sometimes it's better to wait a bit to be properly composed. Holding off was the better strategy, because today, May14th, I very unexpectedly received a second replacement tree. This tree is very much alive and in relatively decent condition. There's been some tip pruning of what I suspect was winter dieback, but the tree is leafing out nicely. I'm pleased with this replacement. I'm leaving my rating at neutral. Although the company did stand behind it's nursery stock and make it right eventually, it took three trees to get one live one and communication was slow. |
| Neutral | maia447 Trenton, NJ (2 reviews) May 11, 2010 | Having posted yesterday, I received an email from Harris Seeds explaining: "Live plant material such as fruit trees do not ship from our facility, but are shipped directly to our customers from our supplier's facility. Our supplier only ships at certain times because of the preparation required for live material. We offer multiple ship week options to our customers, but they are at set dates. For example, the products you ordered can only ship the week of April 26th and the week of May 3rd, and unfortunately the dates cannot be changed. We would love to accommodate customers who require other shipping times and therefore are working with the grower to offer more flexible shipping in the future."
If I had received that information at the time of my request (and an apology would have been nice) I would have been satisfied, and I am satisfied now. |
| Negative | maiasimon Trenton, NJ (1 review) May 8, 2010 | I ordered 2 apple trees, 5 raspberry bushes and some rhubarb in March 2010. In early April, I emailed asking when I should expect them as I was leaving town for an extended trip and needed them by April 22. Three or four days later I got an email that said they were scheduled to be shipped the week of April 26 and if there were any problem with that, I should call them. So, I called them, (it was now April 15th) and was told that they could not ship anything early. They did offer to ship a week later, but I would not be home to receive them until the end of May. No offer was made to ship part of the order or to make any other accommodation. So I canceled the order. I do not understand why they could not ship any of the things I ordered 5 days earlier. It just doesn't make sense to me. I was very disappointed.

| Positive | gourmetgardens Cookeville, TN (2 reviews) April 29, 2010 | I ordered 20 blueberry bushes from Harris seed. They were very healthly with a great root systems. I also ordered 100 purple asparagus plants. These plants were also healthy, however, almost 1/2 the plants came up green instead of purple. I contacted Mark Green @ Harris Seeds and he immediately corrected the problem by sending me an additional 100 purple plants. I highly recommend Harris Seeds. Their products and customer service are equally outstanding. |

I ordered 2 Bonfire peach trees as a gift from Harris and the website indicated you could place the order to be shipped the following week. I received a phone call two days later telling me that I had missed the shipping date for the tree and it was no longer available. While on the phone with the company, I checked the website again and the trees were still listed as available for purchase. The person on the phone indicated that she had received a complaint about the same thing the day before but that it would be about 24 hours before the website could be updated. Very disappointed. On April 29th, 2010, Chickenhawk8 changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:
After my original comment the company did contact me and say they could fulfill my order. I had already purchased a replacement but I did appreciate their effort to make it right. |

Harris Seeds has THE BEST customer service that I've ever experienced in a seed company. I put in an order for some seeds on March 6th. When I hadn't received the seeds by March 25th I wasn't too surprised, b/c it had taken other seed companies much longer than that to mail seeds to me. But, I gave them a call just to see when they thought they might be shipping them. Someone ANSWERED THE PHONE (a rarity these days), and the woman on the phone was extremely pleasant. It turned out that they had already shipped them back on March 10th (just 4 days after I placed the order!). But, I never got them. She said that she'd talk to her supervisor, but was pretty sure that they'd be shipping me more seeds. I received the new shipment on March 29th - just 4 days after my phone call!!! Wonderful, wonderful customer service!!! I couldn't be more happy with them.
On April 13th, 2010, pgt added the following:
I wanted to add that the seeds had excellent germination (Impatiens, Dichondra 'silver falls' and stock). If I could give a higher rating than 'positive' I would. |
| Positive | DRH2 Brunswick, ME (Zone 4b) (9 reviews) March 29, 2010 | I have placed small orders with Harris over the past few years. I am very impressed with the quality of service I have received and even more impressed with the quality of the seeds. Unlike some companies I have dealt with, Harris' seed has had excellent germination as well as sufficient quantities which more than compensates for their slightly higher prices. Good company; I'll be doing even more business with them in the future. |
| Positive | Drahkk Valley Park, MS (4 reviews) March 1, 2010 | Harris's prices are a little high, but well worth it for the quality of product and service. They offer multiple pack sizes on most products, so you're not stuck ordering a lot of small packs to get enough for a larger planting. I've ordered a fairly wide variety from them and always been pleased with their speed, accuracy, and germination rate. Though I did not order from them this year, it is only because their pack sizes are generous, and I still have plenty left from last year! |
| Positive | eldonk Glencoe, MN (5 reviews) February 1, 2010 | Placed small order which I received promptly as well as a couple messages expressing their appreciation for my business. Had several questions over several weeks and placed another small order. Although I purchased less than $50 worth of products they have treated me as though I was one of their best customers with almost immediate responses to each email. The varieties within each product line are somewhat limited at this time but appear to be among the best for those products. Very, very satisfied at this time. |
| Positive | Blackbelt_Lizzy La Grange Park, IL (19 reviews) September 6, 2009 | I ordered a large quantity of various seed types for the first time from this company. I planted the seeds late (end of June) not expecting much and I was very plesantly surprised that all the seeds I planted are now in full bloom including a fabulous grouping of Bells of Ireland. I will definitely order from them again. |
| Neutral | jajtiii Richmond, VA (Zone 7b) (4 reviews) July 11, 2009 | For background, I have been gardening for several decades, but only decided to build a greenhouse and expand my pursuits three years ago. Since then, I have been actively spending a lot of money at various online nurseries/retailers and can say that these guys are horrible when it comes to quality and customer service.
There are two examples, but I will focus on one to demonstrate my point and warn others away from these guys.
1. Last Fall, I decided to get heavily into Daylily Hybridization. I was advised to use a starting tray that Harris and another retailer carry. I ordered several from both.
2. Harris sent me less plugs then promised and the trays were not only noticeably inferior to the other company's, but they actually caused more labor due to the said inferiority (it was damaged and cost me seedlings).
3. The inferior trays, I did not have a major problem with (heck, I did get 75% of them to work, so life goes on). But, I wanted them to make good on the missing plugs. So, I put an order in for the plugs with Harris and advised them that they had shorted me in the initial shipment and to make good when they sent my new order.
I received (and still have) a receipt, but never heard back from them. I never received the plugs that I ordered, nor did I receive the plugs that they shorted me.
I can honestly say that I have never gotten such poor service - not even from what I call the 'cheapo' online nurseries. I strongly urge anyone considering this company to look elsewhere. On July 31st, 2009, jajtiii changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:
After making this post, DG copied Harris Seeds on my post. To be fair, they immediately contacted me and resolved my issue by replacing the plugs that had been shorted before.
It would appear that my initial complaint was misunderstood. I suppose that I should have contacted them again to give them a chance to respond, but I assumed (incorrectly, it would seem) that they were ignoring me.
It is very positive that they made the issue right. I only wish that it would have been resolved after my initial correspondence with them. |
| Positive | Clairemont San Diego, CA (2 reviews) May 23, 2009 | I placed two orders this year and received my seeds very quickly with excellent germination rates. On my last order, I placed it on May 20 and received it today, the 22. That's what I call fast. I am particularly fond of being able to order seeds in large quantities for about half the price other seeds companies charge, plus they are in sealed foil packets with the date they were packaged and the germination rate. They have a huge selection in the professional grower area.
My only regret is that they have a limited selection of seeds in the home gardener section which are for smaller quantities of seeds in the packets. However, at their prices, you can order from the professional grower area and share or store your surplus seeds. All in all, this is a great and reliable seed company. Nice growers catalog too. I can honestly recommend them. This is the third year I've used Harris and it won't be the last. |
| Positive | tj0504 Saint Louis, MO (13 reviews) April 26, 2009 | I received my first order from Harris Seeds yesterday. I had ordered two columnar apple trees, one cherry tree, and twenty blackberry plants, with standard shipping.
I was quite surprised to find, instead of the 1-2 foot tree seedlings I expected, tree seedlings that were a good 4 feet in height(on trees whose max height is approximately 8 feet). Each had leaf buds ready to break and each trunk was "springy". The blackberries were each approximately one foot in length and also with leaf buds about to break
I was very pleased with not only my order, but with their customer service as well. A couple of necessary calls regarding billing questions, resulted in very pleasant and assistive customer service agents.
An excellent company with which to do business. |
| Positive | bsetiawan Corryton, TN (Zone 6b) (5 reviews) April 3, 2009 | I cannot say enough good things about this company. For two years I have ordered supplies from Harris Seeds. My orders have arrived super fast and exactly as I ordered them. I do think they are a little pricey..but I don't have to worry a moment about delivery or quality. They are the tops and I'll continue to order from them as long as they keep up the good work. |
| Positive | LOVIE2 Boston, MA (Zone 6a) (8 reviews) March 31, 2009 | I am THRILLED with this company! This was my first time orderering from them and it was a very positive experience. The customer service was excellent, they answered all of my questions without sounding like they were making it up as they went along. (I'll be posting another review for a different company soon). I recieved my order in 3 days! Ordered on 3/24 late in the evening. It shipped 3/26 - I received it on 3/28. I will definitely be using them again! On August 17th, 2009, LOVIE2 added the following:
Had to come back to say that everything that I ordered from Harris Seed has germinated and have done wonderfully where other seasoned gardners have done poorly in their gardens. I order some additional tools and am very happy with them. Will definitely use them again next season! |
| Positive | knpeterson Waynesville, MO (4 reviews) March 27, 2009 | I am so pleased with this company! This was the first time I ordered with them and I'm glad I did! After ordering I received an email thanking me for my order and the day my order arrived in the mail, I had a message on my answering machine (from a real person!) thanking me again for placing my first order with Harris Seeds. The seeds were shipped in a timely manner and have excellent planting instructions included on the packages. I will most certainly be a repeat customer. This company also has a great selection of seeds. My garden is growing larger by the year because I am selling at farmers markets and I will be placing larger orders with Harris Seeds now that I know they are a quality company who appreciates all of their customers no matter what size the order. |
| Positive | yardener Greenfield, OH (Zone 6a) (19 reviews) March 10, 2009 | I haven't placed any "large" orders from Harris. Usually just a few pumpkins, gourds, or corn seeds I can't find anywhere else.
Everything always arrives early and I have no problems with germination.
Harris is definately a keeper for me. Prices are good and selection is great |
| Positive | phineas117 Springfield, IL (3 reviews) March 8, 2009 | wonderful products and HONEST. I overfigured my balance by 1.40, and recieved a check from Harris seeds. you can order from them with confidence!!!!!

| Positive | lssfishhunter Jonesville, SC (Zone 7b) (6 reviews) March 5, 2009 | I have bought a light rack and a heat mat from this company at different times. It took a while for the light rack to come in but the heat mat took almost no time. The only problem that I have with this company is the price. I feel like they are a little expensive but I would definitely look at them first when looking for these types of products. |
| Positive | nygardener2 New Hyde Park, NY (12 reviews) January 15, 2009 | Great seeds ! Fast shipping (5 days after order) Seeds were packed in December and November. They have good varieties and good website. Will order again, and post updates on seed quality :) |
| Positive | markc125 Winthrop, ME (4 reviews) April 2, 2008 | I have ordered seeds from Harris for seven years. Despite our cold, wet springs in Maine I consistently have over 90% germination. For example, peas get planted around tax day and they do great. While others are replanting in May and June my garden is doing great. Their service is fast, prices resonable, and the service reps very nice. Until I get planted I will plant Harris seeds. |
| Positive | Dahliadoc Muskegon, MI (1 review) January 9, 2008 | I ordered several packets of seed and fired off a check. Within a week, and accurate order was received. |
| Positive | White_Hydrangea Aurora, CO (Zone 5a) (20 reviews) June 13, 2007 | I ordered seeds from Harris. They arrived quickly, and germination has been good. |
| Positive | bmuller Albuquerque, NM (Zone 7a) (19 reviews) June 12, 2007 | I have traded with this company only once, ordering seeds from them last fall (2006), with satisfactory results.
However, my more recent experience with them has been anything but satisfactory. In late March of 2007, Harris Seeds sent me a large package of corn seeds ($18.00 worth) that I had not ordered (I live on a small suburban lot--a large quantity of corn seeds would be ludicrous for me). I contacted the company, was treated courteously and was sent a return label, returned the seeds, and believed the error to be corrected.
Then a few weeks later (end of April, probably), I received a refund check in the mail for $18.00. I emailed the company to let them know the check had been sent in error and I was destroying it--which I did. (In retrospect, I probably should have returned it with an explanatory letter, via registered mail.) I received no response to my email, but around June 8 I received a bill in the mail--for $18.00.
I don't know who ordered those corn seeds, nor whether that person ever received seeds, bill, explanation, or anything else. I only know that I did NOT order the seeds and will never place an order with this company again. I wish I had never placed an order with them in the first place; then they would not have had my name and address in their database to confuse with that of another customer.
When this problem first arose, I considered posting a negative rating on DavesGarden but decided I should first try to resolve the matter with Harris Seeds. Only after all of this failed am I exasperated enough to post this rating; I would not have done so if the matter HAD been resolved. Certainly, anyone can make a mistake; however, a reputable company should not make multiple mistakes on the same transaction, especially a transaction that was never sought by the customer in the first place!
On June 20th, 2007, bmuller changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following:
I'm changing my rating based on one positive transaction (as mentioned) and a prompt response from Harris Seeds to my recent complaint.
In today's mail, I received an apology from Joanne Rodrigues, Harris's Customer Care Manager, plus a gift certificate for merchandise from their company. I hope things go well from this point on. |
