A perfect transaction!
I purchased two Japenese maples from Whitman Farms - a field grown 'Fireglow' and a large 'Coonera Pygmy'. Both trees arrived healthy, beautiful, and well packaged. It was a delight just to speak with Lucile on the telephone. She even followed up on the trees two weeks after purchase. I will purchase from Whitman Farms again.
Got two different trees in 2007. Trees were excellent quality trees that had been trained and grown with care, better than average that would find at a nursery. Well packaged and the best trees I have gotten shipped by far... other trees I've gotten shipped from other online dealers all needed a lot of growth to start looking good and strong, because they are thin and mis-shapen. The trees I've gotten from Whitman farms were already strong trunked with a heavy rootball, well branched ready to look good the first growing season. Worth the price to get what you want, highly recommended, this is specialty tree shipping done right.

After many failed attempts to grow the weak sticks of Daphne "Briggs Moonlight" sold by the "glossy catalog" plant retailers, I decided I needed to start with a better established plant. I had almost given up when I found Whitman Farms. They had 2 gallon plants! Shipping was expensive but appropriate given the weight and distance (from OR to NY). The plants arrived securely packaged and extremely healthy. I had never seen the type of pot/root covering before that these shipped with. It was an ingenious sort of cloth type pot. It held the roots, dirt and moisture well. The side "lacing" allowed me to remove it with minimal disturbance to the roots. The two that I ordered have done extremely well. All this and I had a lovely chat with Lucile too. She is wonderful. My only disappointment was that the two plants had very different forms. One was better branched with a more wide spread shape and the other quite narrow and uprite. Given that I had ordered two, It would have been nice to receive a better matched pair; however, I did not ask for them to be so. I am certain that had I asked, Lucile would have been more than accommodating.
The best recommendation I can give is that I'll be ordering again this year.
Proof that size isn't everything, Whitman Farms had terrific selection and wonderful tree stock. Dave's Garden should list this nursery in their Top 30 list. The five trees that we bought are very large and in excellent health! Lucille is a fount of knowledge about each of the trees she carries and willing to let you know what will and what won't work for your conditions. She is very honest about a plant's shortcomings. I will not hesitate to do business here again.
I recently ordered a Dove tree from Whitman's and Lucille is a dream. I can't have shipping until fall so after pouting some, I gave Lucille my card number and told her to charge it now, or I'll forget . If the tree is as wonderful as Lucille, then I will die happy. Thanks much for the conversation and laughs. Will update once my tree gets to me.

The Dove tree arrived today. It's a gorgeous specimen, not really tall but branched beautifully and each branch has a fat bud at the end. Leaves were still intact and after a week in travel, it was still in perfect shape. Removing the grow bag found almost no soil loss. Next spring I hope to see a bloom on this variety. I highly recommend Whitman Farms. Lucille is a gem and has a ton of information. Very eager to help you in any way possible. On August 28th, 2008, patnjbob added the following:
This spring my Dove Tree bloomed with huge gorgeous flowing doves. To my surprise, it's now August and I'm getting a second bloom. I suspect the weather has confused my tree but what a joy to see it in bloom again.

Simply awesome company. I ordered a field grown tree (Cornus kousa 'Wolfeye') and it arrived in great shape and was huge, especially considering the cultivar is a slower growing one. The root ball was large and in great shape also. Very nice to talk to on the phone and was a pleasure to do business with. I highly recommend them. I can't wait to order from them again.

Today, I received my Cornus mas Variegata from Whitmans. It is in bloom, has many branches, and is 55 inches tall, from the ground up. There are many feeder roots, it will be easy to plant, and will take-off like crazy, because of Lucile's root ball bag. All of the nine trees I have received from from Whitmans have been like this. The "high risk" ones in my zone 5 garden such as 2 'stewartia pseudocamellia'
have survived and thrived unlike the ones that didn't from 2 other plant growers.I believe the extra good root system, and field growth from Whitmans made the difference. If you love unique trees, Whitmans is best in my experience. I'm looking forward to next year, because I'm going for some of Lucile's exquisite Japanese Maples!! Ordering from Whitmans is always a real pleasure from beginning to end. Thanks, Lucile!

Lucille was a pleasure to do business with and was more than helpful in finding the perfect trees for me. My Paperbark Maple and Purple Smoke tree arrived today in great condition and much larger than I thought. Will be doing business with them again!
Lucille is an absolute pleasure to do business with. She gave a very honest opinion of each plant I asked about on a phone call prior to my ordering and helped me narrow down the ones worthy of adding to my collection. The plants were carefully packed and in good condition upon arrival. If you are looking for unusual maples and dogwoods, this is a great nursery.

Wow, what a pleasure to do business with this family owned company. They are VERY responsive and informative. I bought 4 currant bushes and even had to change the order on the fly. No problem with Whitman. They even scheduled the delivery and ship priority USPS. These folks are specialist in Ribes and berries. I'm just waiting for them to branch out to other orchard items. I'll be the first to buy.
I highly recommend them.

OK, 2 years later I find that Lucile Whitman also specializes in Mulberry trees, (a new species we are adding to our 109 eclectic fruit tree orchard). Once again, I have to say 'WOW", what great Mulberry stock and superior service. What pleasure it is to buy from Whitman Farms. Lucile Whitman tells it like it is, and if she tells you something you can count on it!
I had the most wonderful experience with mail ordering Japanese maple trees from this nursery. The trees were high quality and professionally grafted. I will definitely order many more in the near future. Thanks again Lucile!!!
Overall great experience--answered questions through e-mail promptly, reasonable shipping, nice plants, friendly service. Also very honest about hardiness/reliability of certain stock. An online shopping cart would be awesome, but making the phone call is definitely worth the extra effort. I would love to try some of the bigger stock--there is always next year.
I had a wonderful experience with Whitman Farms. Lucile is super friendly and helpful and goes the extra mile with customer service. She even took pictures of a tree I was interested in and sent it to me through email. The shipping and prices are very reasonable. The trees I ordered were sent entirely across the the country (to NC) in just a few days. I highly recommend this nursery. A+++++

Since we are about an hour from the farm I phoned to ask if we might make and appointment for a visit. Lucille was friendly and more than willing to make an appointment for us.
We were delayed in traffic, so I phoned to tell her we would be late. She was friendly and said we were welcome whenever we arrived.
She met us at the office with her 9 month old black standard poodle, Lulu. When she was we had two dogs in our truck she invited them along on the tour. They had as good a time as we did.
I explained that we are new in the area and trying to plan and plant our property. I told her the areas in which we wanted shrubs and trees and she asked detailed questions about our desires for appearance, size, etc. She also asked the sunlight and shade in each area.
She proceeded to take us on a tour of her very, very impressive tree farm. I felt comfortable asking any questions, even very basic ones from a new person in the area.
She showed us trees and shrubs for each area we asked about and, when I asked her about various plantings she answered every question thoroughly. She is a delightful and very knowledgeable person.
She pulled out specimins of each tree or shrub we decided upon, reserved sold out items for us for next spring, gave detailed information on what to do with the bagged plants until they are planted, took me in the office and made labels for each one, wrote on my receipt a more detailed description that the one printed by the computer, helped us load everything in our truck, and, in general, made it a very special, fun afternoon.
Every single tree and shrub I saw on our tour looked health and vigorous. The trees and shrubs we brought home with us are large, well branched, many in bud, and reasonably price, especially because many are unique, all are large and all very healthy.
Her farm is a beautiful property with a fabulous view of the countryside and the city of Salem. When we left I turned to her and said, "You've got a good life and seem to love what you do." She grinned and said, "It sure isn't bad."
I can bearly wait until tomorrow when I can start placing them on our property. Now, if someone would just come dig a whole lot of big holes for me.......
Big thumbs up for Lucille and her wonderful farm.

Everything we brought home from Lucille's farm is thriving. Every one of the trees and shrub is a lovely addition to our yard. All the plants are growing and leafed out. We will buy from Lucille again. There are so many wonderful trees and shrubs at her farm I find myself seaching for places to put more in our yard.
Whitman Farms lives up to their reputation, and in my opinion even exceeds it. In 2005, I ordered two 'gold treasure' sweetgums , and though they are young, have many branches. There are many feeder roots on the root ball, and they took right off, I had ordered two other of the same tree, from another grower in 2003, for the same price, and but they were sparse compared to the ones from Whitmans, Recently I telephoned and ordered two of their Stewartia Pseudocamellia, and asked Lucille if Whitmans offered Craetegus 'Winter King. These are hard to come by in my experience One good nursery has them, but the shipping and handling is way more than the cost of the tree itself. Lucille said she didn't offer them , but knew someone who did, and she went there, and looked them over. She now has them in storage for my order!! I was amazed (and grateful) she went to the trouble, Thank you, Lucille.
On November 21, 2005, Monday, placed a small order by phone in the morning and it arrived November 23, Wednesday, at 3 PM at my address in Downers Grove, Illinois! Red Currant 'Tatran' and White Currant 'Blanka' were 2 year old, well rooted, well packed, shipping charges normal, the person taking the order very pleasant. What else could one want?
I ordered a dogwood tree from Lucile last fall. The tree made a long trip across the country. After its journey, the tree was beautiful when it arrived and it made it through our tough winter with flying colors. Her system with root bags allows for shipping of large trees at a very reasonable prices. She has a great selection of hard to find trees and shrubs. I would wholeheartedly recommend using this company.

I ordered three Paw Paws last week and was asked by Email from Lucile Whitman when I wanted them. I said the middle of this week, and received them yesterday in good condition and very well packed and labeled according to variety (Wells, Sunflower and Penn Golden). So far the payment hasn't posted to my account.
