I have nothing but great things to say about my experience purchasing hostas from Hallson.
Communication was top-notch--my order was confirmed immediately, and when I placed a second order and included a note asking for combined shipping I received a prompt response combining my order. Since I'd ordered in winter, before I knew what the spring weather would be like, I did have to write and change my shipping date. That was also seamless--I received a response in less than 24 hours confirming my new ship date. Later, I was notified when my order shipped and given tracking details.
The plants I received were well packaged and arrived beautiful and healthy. Hostas from Hallson are field grown, and they arrive bare root. The root systems are incredible--no weakling plants with puny roots that require babying. I planted the hostas I ordered and they quickly took off.
Hostas are generously sized--the best I've seen from mail order (and I've tried a few.) When ordering hostas, check the site to see what you're getting because size is listed with the plant description. Most are 3 or 4 year old plants dug whole for shipping. A few are divisions, but you receive two or three substantial eyes.
Every good thing you've heard gardeners say about Hallson is true--they provide exceptional service, have tremendous knowledge, and sell gorgeous healthy plants. You'd be hard pressed to find better for their prices at a nursery, much less any other mail order company.
One of my very favorite mail order plant sources. The plants are large and healthy, extremely fast shipping and great customer service. Definitely one of the best around. I have yet to be disappointed and have been buying from them for about 4-5 years.
I am lucky enough to be right around the corner from the nursery and have been buying from them when they were on wolf lake and truly appreciate them taking the time to advise a novice such as I and helping set up my original plantings with a great assortment. People say I have some of the best looking plants on lake somerset.

This is my first time ordering from Hallson Gardens. I ordered:
1 Echinacea Mac N Cheese
1 Echinacea Tiki Torch
1 Echinacea Tomato Soup
1 Echinacea Sundown
This company has great communication practices and actually offers to add or substract items from the order prior to shipment, not many mail-order companies do that.
I searched for a company that offered all of these coneflowers at reasonable prices and that had good to great ratings on Davesgarden, a lot of research went into selecting Hallson Gardens for this order. There was only one coneflower on my list that Hallson's did not offer and that is Tangerine Dream.
But in any case, if their plants are as great as their customer service, I will definately be a repeat customer to this company.

I have recieved my coneflowers and I have to say that this company is still A++++. The coneflowers were big roots, just coming out of dormancy and appear to be very healthy. They even sent me a free coneflower 'All That Jazz'.
I've purchased nearly a dozen conflowers this year and I have to say that, compared to two other mail order nurseries and my local garden center (which doesn't have a lot of selection), the coneflowers recieved from Hallson's are exceptional in size and vigor. They also sent along tips especially for growing my coneflowers!
Also, these plants are huskier root stock than is offered anywhere else for the price. So, instead of paying the same or as much as $6 more per plant elsewhere... I'm just going to stick with Hallson's!

I just have to add more praise to my previous comments. The garden is ablaze with gorgeous lilies at the moment and many came from Hallson's. They sent such beautiful bulbs that were so anxious to grow. They are putting on quite the show and it is only the first year I have had their lilies blooming in my garden. I am now a loyal fan!!!On April 27th, 2010, sandnsea2 added the following:

I have ordered bare root perennials for many years and I received my first order today from Hallson. Boy was I impressed. The plant material exceeded my expectations. Extra large roots and plants. Healthy material. Profesionnal packaging. No slimey leaves. No tiny root system. Well developed root systems equal to 2-3 years growth all packaged in a dry peat material. And their prices are as good or better than other nurseries who charge top dollar for small plants. I advise everyone to order material from these guys, I know that I'll be ordering lots more.

I received my first order from Hallson Gardens and was very pleased. They are truly deserving of all the praise here.
Everything was packaged well and even included labels.
All the plants and bulbs appear to be healthy and just beginning to show growth. I look forward to seeing them all bloom this summer.
Recently ordered three hostas from Hallsons after calling and getting first hand advice from the owner as I had not grown hostas before. They arrived on time and had a large root system and three thick sprouts at the top. I planted them as instructed and they are on the grow already. Also an extra plant was put in and it too is sprouting. I can hardly wait to see the leaves. Having toured many places that sell hostas I can see that this large root system and 3 huge sprouts are a very good value for the money.

First time ordering. I was looking for a particular variety of mountain bluet (amethyst in snow) and decided to look at the nurseries listed in the top 30. I noticed Hallson Gardens was located in Michigan (where I am) and having not had previously heard of them I figured what the heck.
I got the bluet, a daylily, a sedum and a number of lily bulbs. The perennials were planted immediately (and have started growing already), the bulbs have had to wait, but they are good healthy looking bulbs.
The nursery included a free bulb, similar to the kinds I had already purchased and its one that I would have purchased had I noticed it when I was placing the order originally.
Packing was very good, in a priority mailing box and snugly packed. All plants (and bulbs) were packed in peat moss and still dormant when received. Prices were fair and I wish the place was closer to me as I would make the drive out next time instead of waiting for the mail to arrive. An email was sent upon shipping.
I ordered Asiatic, oriental & trumpet lilies.
The trumpet lilies were the best, large and fragrant, the Asiatic lily were good but the oriental lilies were a little on the small side.
Good experience overall.
I am so glad that out of such a negative reason for finding the Watchdog, that I am able to find such an awesome and reputable dealer/s. This is such a great resource for avid gardeners such as myself. I cannot wait to order some of your hostas. It really seems like you guys are at the top of your game! I cannot wait.

I ordered based on the high DG ratings, and was not disappointed. The hosta plants that arrived today were large, clean, and healthy, and carefully packed. Good communication from Hallson, and the plants arrived when they said they would. And they included a nice bonus. Thanks to a great seller!
I ordered 25 day lilies and they arrived quickly in perfect condition. They actually gave me several extras. Even through the horrible St. Louis heat, they are thriving. I also ordered ligularia and it grew so fast it overtook some I had planted 6 weeks earlier. They give excellent planting instructions, and I will certainly order from them again. Also, they respond immediately to e-mails and answer all the questions you could have about their plants. Highly recommended.
I ordered from this company because of its DG ratings and was not disappointed. Prices are reasonable and bulbs were in good shape. In addition, I got 1 or 2 extra bulbs which was a very nice surprise. Thanks Chris and all of those folks who contribute to DG.

Ordered some Astilbe and Black Eyed Susans in March. They arrived exactly when expected for zone 5/6 (Mid April) and were absolutely gorgeous. They were extremely healthy plants and have all taken off fast in the garden - expecting flowers soon. Also really appreciated the bonus Bela Lugosi daylily which was also a huge and healthy clump. I would happily visit their website for more plants next Spring.

Great experience. Opened the box and had three items - I had only ordered two; when I checked the packing slip, it turned out they had included a bonus sedum. How nice! The items were all bare root, and on one (coreopsis) I could not tell which end was up and didn't know what to do. I called the next day, and Chris answered the phone and took the time to explain to me in detail what to look for and how to plant it properly. He was extremely helpful and I was impressed to call and have the phone answered by someone who could answer my question right off the bat, in such detail. Although I would prefer to receive plants in pots, rather than dormant bare root plants, I would definitely order from Hallson again.

I snagged their last Liberty hosta. It quickly arrived in good health in moist soil that was wrapped up in paper towel and a baggie. I was pleased with its size. Hallson also gave me a bonus, Halcyon hosta! I am very satisfied and highly recommend them.

I have ordered multiple times from Hallson Gardens and have had my expectations exceeded every time. I have ordered daylilies, lilies and hostas from them and all the plants have thrived. They were packed well for the shipment and arrived in great condition. Excellent communication too. Plant selection is great too! I really love the Forum on the website too.

I just got my spring order this week, I have been buying since summer 2007. Great hostas with usually multiple eyes and very robust roots. Chris strives to add new exciting stock every year which is hard on my wallet but fun for planning while snow is on the ground. His website has excellent information on Hosta Virus and he also has an excellent Hosta Virus DVD(?) for sale. I have also had excellent results with the lilies that he has for sale with terrific bargains during the summer months.

If you are looking for lilies, look no further! I ordered 15 or so oriental bulbs in the spring and all of them bloomed into big beautiful flowers that lasted. The customer service here is stellar,,,I was a pain and asked to have my order shipped earlier than their ship date and they were very helpful allowing my order to ship at the first possible safe date! I will definitely be shopping with these guys again. P.S, they also send newsletters with great end of season sales too if you want!

This was my first order from Hallson's but certainly won't be my last! I ordered hostas at the end of June and thought that they might suffer in the heat...They arrived in less that a week in perfect condition. They are generously sized and beautiful...Perfect packing kept them safe. I am very excited about them and can't wait to add them to my gardens. Oh, and thanks for the lovely bonus plant:)

WOW - the hostas sent were incredible ! They were even shipped the same day I ordered them. Very fresh and one was even blooming. Wish I could post a picture of the huge, upright, strong specimens! Will keep them on the top of my list for hosta purchases.
I placed my first order with Hallson's last week. I received my order less than a week later and it included beautiful and lush Hosta plants. The root systems on the plants were well established and I was highly impressed. As if the top quality plants were not enough, they included a free plant that was just as nice as all of the others in the shipment. From now on, I will be buying a lot more from Hallson's. They are top notch!
I am lucky to live an hour or so from this nursery so I've never mailordered from them. I make a yearly trek to their retail nursery. Their plants are huge and healthy. The nursery is the most immaculate I've ever seen. Even in the middle of the summer when many other place's plants tend to look draggly, theirs are still robust. And they are very knowledgeable, helpful and just plain nice.
Ordered two different types of lily bulbs. Got an e-mail a few days later that they had shipped. Arrived packed very well. Bulbs were great size and looked very healthy. Even got a bonus bulb! Wonderful company....couldn't ask for more!

I thought I was done with spring plantings and could put my wallet away, but the echincacea bug bit me this year and I just had to have one more plant and variety to round things out. I ended up placing this small order with Hallson Gardens due to their good rating here, their attractive and hype-free website, and their good prices.
Shortly after placing the order, I received a very courteous evening call from Chris. He explained that they had just about sold out the crop and that the remaining plants were small. He offered to include more than one in my order if I still wanted to go ahead, so I agreed. He also took the time to inquire about my intended use of the plants, to make sure I was likely to be successful.
I received *three* small but very nice bareroot plants for the price of one. I'll be happy to grow them from that size and I'm pleased with both the value and the service.
I've placed several orders with Hallson Gardens in the past and just received my latest order this week. As usual it was fantastic! Nicely packaged with individual labels for each plant. Large bulbs and huge roots, as well as a very nice bonus. This is by far my favorite mail order nursery. You'll not find better products, better service , or more honest business owners anywhere else. Don't be hesitant to order from Hallson's. I'm sure you'll be satisfied too. :-)
Sometimes it is difficult to find newer cultivars here, so last year when I wanted a Rozanne geranium I ordered from a local co. that picks up plants in Denver. Got a one quart Rozanne for $10. Loved the plant, but this year when I wanted more I went looking for someplace that might be a little better value. Found Hallson, and ordered 3 Rozannes for $7 each. Huge roots, far bigger than my one quart from last year! Also got 3 Mr. Goodbud sedums, again large, healthy roots. And a bonus lily was included. Thanks, guys; I'm happy with the plants, I'm happy with the service, I'm happy with the price!
Today I received my first order from Hallson Gardens.
The lily bulbs were large, healthy, and sprouting. The perennial had an enormous root system and the crown had new growth. The person I spoke with on ordering said he'd go dig one up for me that day. He must have because my order arrived via US mail only 4 days after I placed it.
All items were packed in fine peat in plastic bags, labels included.
I was impressed with the product and the customer service and will definitely order from them again.
This is a wonderful company. The plants I ordered look terrific. The roots of the Hibiscus I received are the largest of ANY plant that I have ever ordered. The ferns and pulmonaria were massive. The packing was done with great care. I am overjoyed with this company. Thank you for the outstanding plants and service.
