I ordered several items, all of which arrived in good shape. In particular, the strawberry plants were well rooted mature stock, and all 100 of them are growing just fine, although I do wish they had been shipped a little earlier. The yostaberry plants were also well established plants, and are growing fine. The paw paw trees were ok. And the citrus trees are all growing fine, alhough the orange tree was a little small, but the lime tree is already blooming after only about 1 month. All in all my experience with Farmer Seed is that they have exceeded my expectations for a mail order nursery.

Pepper plants arrived as "mush" with nothing left to even try to get them to grow. The tomato plants were curled up and yellow as if they had been in the shipping container for weeks. I have been able to get three of them to look like they are starting to releaf and grow. This is a total mess. $60 down the tube with nothing to show for it. DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO PACKAGE AND SHIP - ASSUMING THE PLANTS WERE HEALTHY WHEN THEY HAD THEM.

Thankfully it is not a large order. I should have done a little research first.

We are sorry that the customer did not plant the other two items and give them a chance since it sounds like they were viable. However, the customer is correct in that they can simply return the merchandise and the original shipping within 14 days of receipt for a refund. The customer could also have received the refund on just the two items and we would hold onto the shipping label in case any of the other items died later. If that happened, they would just need to let us know how many of which item died within one year for free replacements."

All the Plantron catalogs I have received this year, Inter-State, Kelly Nurseries and Burgess are selling a highly invasive plant that they call "Silver Lace Vine." It's latin name is Polygonum cuspidatum and is listed in "Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest" (published by the University of Wisconsin Press-2005) as an "invasive plant of major concern". It is commonly called Japanese Knotweed. I spoke to my local DNR plant specialist and they are aware of 2 plants in our county that they are going to attempt to eradicate. This is a highly invasive plant with a root system that can eradicate anything in its path. Think kudzu. The fact that this company even sells this is deplorable. I have e-mailed them but doubt I will get an answer.

I ordered from this company before I researched them. After reading all the negative comments, I decided to cancel. Since I had ordered over the net, I didn't realize they didn't even have a toll free number, a very bad sign!

I sent an email request to cancel and also faxed them a copy of my approved order with "Please cancel" written on it. I get a transaction printout from my fax so I will use that as proof I cancelled in plenty of time if something should go awry. My credit card company has also been notified that there should be no charges from this company or any of it's affiliates, including Plantron. I am hoping they will do the right thing and cancel the order without any problems or underhandedness.

My question is, has anyone tried to cancel orders from this company before they received their order?

I did not realize at first that Four Seasons Nursery is a part of Plantron/Farmers Seed Co. I ordered from them and received very small, weak plants, 1/3 of the order was dead when received and the others in poor condition. One bulb was crushed when the second part of the order was received. I sent back the original shipping label as instructed. I finally received another small, weak plant as replacement that was covered with ants. I sent the label on the box back for the bulb replacement and that was returned to me with a statement that I needed to send them the label off the box, which has been thrown away. Surely the packing list would have been sufficent to show them that 1, it was their order, not another companys, and that 2, it was paid for and 3, that they had, indeed, shipped it to me. Not good enough. However, in telephoning them I did talk to a woman who, after going through a "who's on first" routine about what shipping label they wanted she finally agreed to accept a copy of my visa bill showing their charge(see #2). Whew! My point is: They make it more trouble than it is worth to get replacements for unacceptably poor quality merchandise, which is finally replaced by unacceptably poor quality merchandise anyway. I will do my best to find out the names of other divisions of the Plantron Inc. and avoid ordering anything from any of them.

We are uncertain as to what the customer is saying above and do not understand if they actually ordered from our company, Farmer Seed, or not. We do not have packing lists, just the shipping label which is found on the outside of the package and contains the customer's name and address. It is also what lists all of the product and is the proof of purchase which is why we request that it be sent back for the guarantee. In addition, we would like to point out that we have received no complaints regarding ants on any of our product."

Attn: President

Dear Sir,

This is a documentation of my experience with your company that has not been a pleasant one. I purchase trees, bushes, flowers and seeds from multiple companies each year for our homes in Georgia and West Virginia with good experiences with most of them.

The method of replacement for items that die within the first year per your catalog guarantee is obviously designed to discourage any customer from submitting any claims. All companies that I have previously dealt with have a representative that a customer can talk with and give replacement orders by phone. This method has an immediate response for the customer and also gives the company an opportunity to talk about any special offers they may want to feature for additional sales. Sending information back and forth by snail mail is not acceptable to me and Cindy has advised me that there is no customer service department, only an order department to talk with. In other words, this is a no customer service sales organization.

As a former CEO of a manufacturing and a service corporation, I am acutely aware of the importance of quality customer service, and it is much more economical to maintain a repeat customer than it is to try and recruit new ones. Of course, different managers have different philosophies about this and I am sure that you know what is best for Farmer Seed.

It was interesting to find on the Farmer Seed & Nursery webpage the following message under the heading of How To Contact Us.

Call our friendly and helpful customer service representatives, Monday - Friday, 8 am - 6 pm CST at (507) 334-1623. Extended hours offered in the spring.

When I spoke with Cindy on 26 May 2006, I was told that there was no one else I could speak with regarding the replacement items from our order and I should just follow the instructions that I received in their letter. She would not be considered to be either friendly or helpful as advertised. I had sent the required information by mail as directed on 10 May 2006 and received a letter requesting some clarification in a note that was postmarked 22 May 2006 at Bloomington, IL. We were looking to have the replacements sent immediately before I leave this area for a month. Under the usual nursery company replacement guarantees, phone or e-mail information would have accommodated immediate shipping for growing the replacement items this season. As of this date, there has been no response to my letter of clarification and no replacement merchandise.

I finally confirmed the fact that I was dealing with a company who had a reputation of ripping off their customers when I located the Garden Watchdog website and read all of the horror stories regarding it. The lesson to be learned is to investigate the reputation of any company that you prepay money to in the hope of receiving merchandise as advertised. It is appalling to learn that the local Chamber of Commerce allows this company to continue to do business in their town.

What say the office of the Attorney General in the state of Minnesota?

Sincerely,

(name witthheld)

The service was fast and the trees, shrubs and plants were in good condition. Some of them were a little on the small side but for the price you pay it is still a good deal. It seems to be the way they are shipped and the amount of time it takes the post office to deliver the package that sometimes takes the toll on the items. Yes, an hours drive is lengthy but make a day of it and visit other nurseries along the way. Take a bucket of water with to get your bare roots into water as soon as possible.

They do charge your credit card before they ship the order. You have to move heaven and earth to get them to credit your account for items you either never recieve or have cancelled. DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM!

I ordered over $200 from this company: pine trees, glads, xmas cactus, strawberries, seeds and a lot more. Items arrived separately, and one package they claimed they shipped never even arrived! So had to wait 2 more months to get it. Finally, after I received everything, I would say only 10% out of the whole order survived the first month. Demanded a replacement, received after 6 months of battling. The company claimed I did not ship them 1/3 of shipping labels, whereas the other 2 out of 3 they received. The replacement request was all in one envelope and they managed to lose one label and tried to deny it. Out of the replaced items only half survived, and now I am sending a third replacement request. Technically, from the first order I only managed to grow 55% of all items ordered. It was my first experience with them and I will never order from them again.

Again I sent that letter certified mail and I have a card acknowledging they received it. I called last week to see when I could expect my replacement plants and they had no record of either of my letters. In fact, since my orders were so large, I had difficulty in even tabulating to make sure everything had been sent due to the fact that many of the items in the small plastic bags had been reduced to MOLDY SLUDGE, unrecognizeable and smelling putrid. When I called them to get the actual name of the fig last year,I got no response-nobody seemed to know. The 2 blueberries I bought from them also died. Of course, they charged my card rather than cancelling the order and now I am on the other end fighting to dispute the charge! Of course they told me the order was cancelled.

My advice....Call your credit card first and tell them to deny any charges from Farmer's Seed and Nursery BEFORE you call to cancel your order! These people charge you as soon as they think you are going to run away.

Update 3/21/05:
Still trying to get my money back. Farmer's Seed has told me that to cancel the order they require a "written letter sent by mail", I sent them a certified letter and insisted on a receipt. I did get the receipt and called them after I noticed a $25 credit applied to my card (Note: this is not the full credit of $200). They informed me that they could not find my letter, but did not argue that it was sent. They tell me that my order should be cancelled, but that I will only receive the refund once the product is "caught" in shipping. Oh...by the way, they cannot give a cancelation number either! Once each shipment is stopped, I will get a refund for that ammount! Can you believe this?!?! Most other reputable companies only charge when they ship each individual shipment. Farmer's seed charges in full and then refunds back only if it is caught.

I have received plants from some of the other Plantron companies. I did not expect much, so I was not disappointed. I may have tried purchasing some lower dollar items from them in the future, but after this mess I will not order from any Plantron company again. There are plenty of other nurseries out there.

THIS COMPANY IS DEPLORABLE. I had done business with the House of Wesley name about 4 years ago when I bought 12 blue spruce, some willows, and other varieties. The shipment was received in poor condition, and everything died except two of the blue spruce which still have not exceeded a height of much more than a foot. I nursed these items from the day I received them, but they were clearly not of good stock.

Recently, I purchased some goods from Farmer Seed, not knowing that they were affiliated. I soon recognized the connection from this website (thanks!), and promptly tried to cancel the order. It became clear from this simple transaction that this is not a reputable company.

First of all, I called 800-544-8200 and spoke with a rep who asked about the order and then said, "It may have started processing, let me check". Since this is January, I could not figure out what they could have started on. Shipments should not start until March.

The rep returned to the line and said that she would notify the processing department to cancel the order. I asked for a confirmation number, and then things got very confusing. The rep asked what number did I call, and when I told her, she made a comment indicating that I had called some other company, but they could handle transactions for Farmer Seed. Huh? She had just said that she cancelled my order, but obviously had not even looked it up! I advised her that this was one of the very reasons I was canceling - the service was reportedly abominable.

She went on to say that *now* I would have to send a cancellation order in writing. I asked about a fax number to send the cancellation. The response was they did not accept faxes. All during the conversation she constantly defended the reputation of the Plantron companies, even though at the beginning she said that she didn't even work for them!

I had about enough of the BS from this rep, so I politely asked to speak with a supervisor, or someone who could help with this transaction. To my amazement, the rep countered that she did not have a supervisor and the only good I could do was to mail them a cancellation notice. Eventually, after repeatedly pressing her, she said that her supervisor's name was Grace Avery, but she was not going to let me talk to her. Simply unbelievable.

I implore anyone reading this to steer very clear of any of these companies, and ask that you warn anyone you can via review sites or word of mouth that these are companies of highly questionable integrity and honesty.

On January 18th, 2005, bbc added the following:

This company just keeps getting more reprehensible! I notified Farmer Seed to cancel my order with e-mail, a phone call to customer service, a fax, AND a certified letter. Yet, instead of cancelling the order, they went ahead and charged my credit card, even though they have nothing to ship for months! This is perhaps the most dishonest behavior I've ever experienced from a catalog/internet merchant.

I have disputed the charge with my cc company, and also filed a complaint with the Illinois Better Business Bureau. I sincerely hope that this company gets shut down. With the experiences I have had, I will now make an extra effort to see that it happens.

BURGESS IS ONLY ONE NAME THIS COMPANY USES! Later I ordered from Farmers Seed and Nursery. 50 Stawberry plants plus some rasberry plants (12). I Recieved 1 bundle of 25 (22 plants actually in the bundle). When I called them with the mistake they said ok they would take care of it. They sent 25 more plants, and BILLED MY CREDIT CARD AGAIN! This company is a division of a company named PLANTRON, INC. Go check out their rating. Save your self some grief!

I have an outstanding order for seeds and I found two of the identical items (same item number) listed in Burgess Seed & Plant catalog. As many know, Burgess and Farmer Seed are both part of Plantron. I e-mailed the company and asked to get the lower price on these two identical items and was told I would have to order these from Burgess. I think this is very poor customer service. Be advised, if you do business with either of these two outfits, compare the items in each catalog so that you get the best deal.

Ordered through their website, which turned out to be Direct Gardening.

The trees I ordered, although cheap, were also dead. When I reported this, they said that they were dormant and give them six weeks.

I did get the dogwood bushes to sprout leaves. These were also twigs - no bush about them.

Most of the merchandise was amazingly puny. I didn't pursue a refund, just figured I'd learned my lesson. Won't order from them again.

Hi,

I had been waiting for their catolog for a long time. It has not came let. I think they probably saw how bad their service had been and had gone out of buisiness. I ordered plants like strawberries and other berries, kiwi, pawpaw, supplies. I waited 5 weeks and still nothing came. I called them and they said everything was backordered. I canceled the order right then. I dont like it how they have different companies in the same town and they are all owned by the same owner. They make you buy from every one so they can get profit. Some things are only availiable in Farmers or Burgess. Plus you have to pay more shipping charges of 6.95. Hear my advice.

Forget about Farmer, Burgess, Richard, and other companies that are the same!

I called to ask for a refund on trees that died. Plants had been shipped rotted and bare root with NO packing material to protest them In addition, I enquired about orderinga Mr. Pea Sheller. I had been told earlier in season to hold off ordering becasue there was a three week limit on returing things if I wasn't happy with it. When I asked about buying pea sheller now, I was told there was a 4-5 week waiting period to have it shipped. I pointed out the dicrepency in what I'd been told, and was basically told that I was mistaken about being told that in the first place. Will NEVER order from here again, even if seed prices are low. Staff is very rude.

My recent experience with Farmer's Seed and Nursery was amazing. I used to do business with them before they sold out to Plantron, so I was quite surprised when my order, placed in January, was immediately billed to my credit card, even though the merchandise wouldn't ship until late April. I'm not even sure it is legal to do that. I called and complained and asked them to reverse the charge until the merchandise shipped, but they said they couldn't do that. I then said to just cancel my order, as I couldn't get anywhere with the so-called customer service girl. She said the only way I could cancel my order was in writing! I ordered online, so I sent two emails to the company with my order number asking them to cancel it and credit my card back. I never heard anything. After notifying the credit card company, my charge got reversed in March, and I thought everything was cool. THEN, the plants arrived anyway, weeks too early, and one tree was dead. Farmer's charged my credit card AGAIN, without my authorization, and I got a letter from them with no phone number or email address, just a mailing address, stating they saw I had my card charged-back, but they shipped and recharged me as they didn't want me to be disappointed!! I had my credit card company charge them back AGAIN, as they made no effort to contact me to find out if I wanted the stuff after all, as they had my phone #, email address, and mailing address. Talk about a terrible way to run a business. Avoid all Plantron companies.

My husband ordered trees from one of the affiliated companies (Farmers Seed and nursery)last year and has not received them yet. I am giving this company 3 days to send us the trees or I will turn them over to the Attorney General for our state and to the Attorney General for the United States. We haqve even paid for the trees.
When you can't get at least the product you ordered and paid for there is help. Please know there is help.

After receiving and returning an incomplete order of garbage almost a month ago I have still not received credit. The order was from Farmers Seed. I canceled and order from Kelly Nurseries that was never sent and have not received credit from them either. Customer service gives me the run around and e-mails return the same. I am contacting the Postmaster in their area to see if something can be done on their end.

After making a rather sizable order, I received my packages in mid-July (in Texas, thetemperature had already reached the high 100s). The plants and bulbs were ruined, all moldy and soft. I never received the replacements promised, and to be honest, I really found the customer service people quite rude. Big thumbs down. Same goes for their sister company, Burgess Seed and Nursery.

The plant material arrived in very poor condition. Some of it was rotten. Most of the plants were very small and it is probable that they will not grow. At least we did get all of the order. We should have just returned all of the order as soon as we opened it. At the present time we have not recontacted the company other then a telephone call to find out how to proceed in getting some satisfaction for the nearly $55 order. The person contacted at the company said that if we felt that strongly about the order we shouldn't order from them again and we won't!I have contacted the Illinois Department of Agriculture about this and they are going to look into the matter since the parent company is in Bloomington Il. I also contacted the Minnesota Department of Agriculture since they have their licensing material on the shipping label. I have not heard from them as of yet, however anyone that has these kind of problems should contact these two departments of ag since they have oversight on these companies.

I recently ordered from Farmer Seed and Nursery. Then I found your comment pages and thought I may have made a mistake by placing an order with them. I contacted them by e-mail and questioned them flat out about whether or not I should cancel my order. Within 48 hours I received a reply that everything was fine and that I had nothing to worry about. I figured that I would never get the items in time to plant and that if I did they would be rotten. Well, I was wrong. Many people have complained and I am sure that some are genuine, but I'll bet a bunch of those people complaining are to blame for their own bad experiences. How quick were they to get the mail, and how did they take care of the plants, etc? I am not trying to discount honest complaints, and I am sure that a lot of bad plants do get shipped, but my experiences with Farmer Seed have so far been excellent. All four packages arrived in perfect shape, and many of the plants were growing profusely when opened. Many items were shipped in overages, apparently to make up for possible losses in transit, but this was not necessary, as all plants are alive and well. I ordered $75.00 worth and this included seeds, trees, bulbs, houseplants, and many other plants. The items were shipped almost immediately and were separated into like item packages. All four packages arrived within 5 days of each other and in perfect time for my planting season. The plants are just as described in the catalog and are first rate plants. I am writing this to help people who are undecided about whether they should do business with Farmer Seed. Yes, you can order with confidence from them. I have to repeat myself and say that Farmer Seed and Nursery is an excellent company. They will be receiving more orders from me!
