I have ordered two times in one week, and called this morning to ask to combine the orders.
The lady on the phone was very friendly, and she called me back within 30 minutes.
Robert emailed me at the same time.
Very good customer service, I love small companies who can speak with their customers.
The plants should be here soon, will update.

I ordered 12 different poppy seeds, very nicely packed, with a picture on the front. I also ordered scallop summer squash seeds.
They came fast, well packed.
I strongly recommend this nursery!

I'm very impressed with my order from Hortus Botanicus. I will often place a small order with a company I haven't tried before to see how they do rather than taking an expensive risk with an unknown company. So, I ordered the calla lily special and also the primula special, along with a packet of seeds and a perennial. Despite this small, mixed-bag order, everything arrived beautifully packed and in excellent shape. They wrapped the seeds up separately and actually used elegant little stickers to close the paper over the whole order-like you'd see in a high-end clothing store. They included a really nice "Thank-you" seed pack and tucked in extras of both the calla lilies and the primula. I'm definitely going to be doing more shopping with them.

I just got my order, after being tipped off by a fellow DG'r in one of the forums about a special on primulas, and I have to say I give these folks an A+. I got two of their specials, 12 auricula primroses and 12 calla bulbs, and they both look great. In both cases there was a little extra-a tiny extra primula crown (the other 12 were nice and big) and another calla bulb, PLUS they sent a mixed flowers seed pkt as a thankyou--it has some unusual items in it like alstroemeria and dierama, not what I expect to find in flower seed mixes. I was a bit nervous about mailing costs since they don't tell you exactly what it will be when you order, but they did do well-my box cost 9 dollars to travel across the country, not bad at all!

This was my first experience ordering from this company and I was very happy with the plants I received. The size and quality exceeded my expectations and the selection on the website was great. And what nice people! I had to talk to customer service before placing my order and they couldn't have been more helpful. I look forward to ordering again.
Just received my order yesterday! I got it much quicker than I was expecting. It was carefully packed and it was like I was opening a gift. All the plants looked GREAT! Prices were also VERY REASONABLE! I love this place. I just wish I lived closer so I could go to the nursery to shop for plants. Thanks again, Robert :-)

Holy toledo! What great plants and incredible packaging! I received a large order from this company today and the plants are awesome. They are large and well-developed with excellent root systems, and very healthy. In addition, the packaging is so carefully done that I felt as though I was opening a gift! A lot of little nice touches that make the ride completely safe for the plants, and also make the package a pleasure to open. I'm going to order from them again soon.

I just love this company. I sometimes have a hard time getting to their website, they're not at the top of google's list, but they have the best and most interesting plants.
You see those people paying a fortune for oddball/rare plants on ebay? Check out Hortus- probably where the seller picked up those plants for a song.
I've gotten some really rare and unusual plants, they always come packed so safely and lovingly- even the seeds!
Every year I spend a long time looking at their website- I want one of each! This year I settled for some guavas (huge) and a few other plants.
Thanks, HB, for being an internet plant company that continues to sell plants outside the norm- it's so nice to have you there for us "I need something unusual" plant nuts!

I ordered Nepenthes sibuyanensis from Hortus Botanicus, as well as a packet of Nepenthes ventricosa 'Red' seeds. They arrived yesterday, in a gorgeous, strong box. Upon opening the box, I saw what has to be the most beautiful, neat (and effective) packing job I've ever seen. Nestled amidst the packing materials was the N. sibuyanensis, which had traveled in comfort, and arrived in pristine condition. It was far larger than I had anticipated, and extremely stout and healthy! The seeds were delicately and beautifully wrapped (they even had a raffia bow tied around the packet!) and labeled so that the packet would not accidentally be discarded.
A+ doesn't go far enough to describe the products and service I received. I am going to look through their catalog again, I saw a few other things I wanted, but didn't order as I had not yet tried this vendor. Now that I know, I am going to go back and get those other nepenthes! I only wish I lived close enough to visit, they have such a wide variety of interesting plants!
My protea arrived damaged from shipping (thanks USPS), but I can tell it was a top quality specimen when it left Hortus Botanicus.
Customer service is A+, and their prices cannot be beat.
I would recommend this company to anyone.

I live in Fort Bragg and have visited (shoped at) Hortus Botanicus on many occasions. It is a great store!! I go there every Valentines day and usually again on Mothers day. It is a much better solution than cut flowers. It is also the perfect place to go when you have a garden question and/or are in need of a plant for any situation. They will not sell you a plant just to make the sale. If they don't have the right thing they will tell you what you do need. The owner is very knowledgable and helpfull. Our area is not always easy to grow plants in and it is very helpful to be directed to the right plants for my location and sun/shade situation. The plants are high quality and healthy. I have had great results with all of my puchases. The seeds are also very high quality. I have had nearly 100% sprout in many varietys (all purchased) with no extra effort and very little care. I recoment this store to all my friends and anyone else who likes high quality plants at great prices. They also have unusual plants for those who like to have something their friends do not have!!

I ordered some Alpine Eryngium and clematis from this company this past spring. Not only is the owner very nice and easy to deal with, I found they pay a lot of attention to the packaging and shipping of their stock. Not only did my purchases meet my expectation - they exceeded it! They were wrapped so painstakingly, I was amazed! They arrived in NY from CA, still fresh and damp inside their wrapping.I had ordered 3 Eryngium roots, but probably got close to a dozen - and all have survived the summer and look healthy. I look forward to them flowering next year!

I ordered Tiarella and a special Astrantia this year. Again, the items were packaged beautifully! Great care was taken especially with the Tiarella so that the dirt did not come out of the pot, and so that the leaves were protected.
I am very pleased to recommend this company. They often have unique or hard-to-find items. The Eryngium roots and clematis I purchased last year have grown into beautiful plants - very healthy. I'm very happy with this company and their products! On September 25th, 2005, lmelling added the following:
I decided NOT to change my rating of this company because the good definitely outweighs the bad, but I was a upset this summer when I found that the Alpine Eryngium I ordered and planted in spring, 2004 was not the cultivar that they showed on their website, but the same ordinary eryngium that I already had. After babying these plants for 2 summers I was VERY DISSAPOINTED with the results when they bloomed...
I emailed the company directly about the difference in what I ordered and what I got, but I was never answered. I know that the owner, Robert, was ill earlier in the season and perhaps my email got lost. But I thought that the non-action by the company should be reported here in the Garden Watchdog.

I ordered three bareroot succulents, and one small potted ficus. Shipping happened within a week of my order, as promised. They were very well packed and cushioned for their journey, especially the ficus, which arrived from its cross country trip with moist soil and healthy foliage.

Have placed just one order with Hortus, and was very pleased with it. All of the (houseplants) were in top condition. I was concerned that 2 of the 3 clematis I received had no leaves -- I e-mailed them with my concerns and received an immediate response. Their information was 100% accurate, and both plants have leafed out nicely. My one experience with Hortus has been 100% positive, and I have no qualms about ordering from them again.

I ordered two Lapageria rosea seedling vines. These are very hard to find plants. The plants were in outstanding condition upon arrival. They arrived quickly with the most professional packaging I have ever come across.
I came across this company by happenstance- and I am so glad I did!
I ordered Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia) from at least 10 companies this year. Hortus had the best and biggest bulbs! No sign of soft spots, and no rot! The other plants I ordered were huge! I was so happy.
Even better than the plants were the people. They were happy to work with me on my order and ship times. They even called me to double check something!
I cannot recommend them highly enough, and I hesitated to have them posted here...part of me wants to keep them as my personal secret supplier! But I had to share with the other gardeners out there.....
