placed an order by PHONE, explained i didn't want any account info created or stored on their site. sure enough, next day i'm informed, via email, that they created an account for me, since THEY decided it was 'convenient' for ME to do so. i'm more than capable of deciding what i consider to be a convenience, and what i consider to be a violation of my privacy. what's w/ the arrogance and presumption w/ all of these internet biz clowns? what ever happened to BASIC CUSTOMER RESPECT? next time they may want to actually listen to what their (prospective) customers actually tell them!! all of these places need to worry more about how they do business w/ the people actually paying them and putting food on their table, instead of the biz they do w/ their metrics/data collecting goblins. issue was resolved by me canceling the order, and dropping them as a potential source, for anything. no further action or response by the company is required. anyone concerned about privacy shouldn't be dealing w/ these folks. even by phone. if they had honored my simple request, they'd have gotten A LOT more orders from me.

Outstanding! Really fast shipping, great selection, good prices, and really healthy plants. After receiving my first order from them, I placed a second order and was not disappointed. I would order from them again without the slightest hesitation.

I am definitely odd person out in my review of this company, but I am left wondering what all the fuss is about. They have a good reputation here, and in the hosta community at large, so I was expecting good things, but overall was left unimpressed.
I ordered $200 worth of hostas (about 13 or so) on 5/11. They acknowledged the order right away, and I had it in hand at the end of that week. That IS impressive, and is the fastest order to door time I have found. If you have to have it now, this is your p lace.
The plants themselves were OK, but just that. The plants were shipped potted, which again is great -- no re-hydration needed, and they can go right in the ground, which they did. Size was just average though; single eyes, something I would consider just an advanced starter, or slightly more. I have received less from other companies, but also have received much more. They were healthy, and that's important, but of average size and above average cost.
For negatives, I start with their website. It is horrible. First, if you want to page through it, you only have three points in the alphabet to enter. You must do a LOT of paging or guess-jumping. I hate that. Second, about 2/3 of items were out of stock. Thanks for letting me know what I can't have, and making me page through it all to see what I can. Put these items in a "sorry you missed it" or "not for sale" section. We can then see what you carry without the burden of all the paging. I understand you want to show us your vast inventory, but it isn't so vast if you don''t have it. Third, at least for me, it would not save my cart across sessions. I had to rebuild my cart several times before I checked out, finally resorting to saving things in a "wish list," but this adds extra clicks. In short, the site is a lot of work to wade through, among the worst of sites I have ordered from. It in itself is a barrier to me ordering again from them. Another negative was that their extensive packaging, although necessary for the potted plants, creates a lot of waste for me to dispose of. I shred it for the compose pile, but there is a lot of it.
I would order from them again, but it would not be my first choice. There are just better value propositions out there with plants just as good.
New Hampshire Hostas was my first experience at ordering hostas online. Their website is easy to use, and they have a very large inventory to choose from when buying hostas. The hostas were shipped very quickly, and the packaging was incredible. All of my hostas arrived in perfect condition with nary one leaf damaged! The plants are extremely healthy and vigorous. Will be placing future orders with them whenever I need more hostas for my shady gardens.
New Hampshire Hostas is one of the best. I just ordered from them this week and had a great experience. The shipping was fast and the plants were securely packaged. The quality of the plants is unparalleled. Selection is great as well, as you can find plants here that aren't offered elsewhere. I would not hesitate to order from them again.
Buying plants from NH hostas was a wonderful experience. The web sight is easy to negotiate and I could select by a large number of criteria easily, slug resistance, sun tolerance, several specific color choices, and size, to name a few. The descriptions of each variety was very complete, listing the above for each plant and having the size pop up whenever I clicked for more details. They have an enormous selection so I could pick exactly what I wanted. My plants arrived 2 days after I ordered with very inexpensive shipping. At first I was unsure about ordering from them, because most of their plants are shipped as 4" pots and I wanted bigger plants. The plants are actually as big as a 2 gallon plant from my very good local nursery, but not pot bound. I've never received such healthy plants by mail order before. I only regret that I didn't find this company before I ran out of room for more hostas.
I live in deep South Texas where the heat of summer can be awesome. I could not find anyone in the valley that carried hostas; therefore, I contacted NH Hostas to see if it was possible to grow hostas in my area; they encouraged me and recommended some plants for me to try.
The plants they sent me arrived in great shape, and I began my journey with these wonderful plants. I have ordered 11 plants and 10 have survived me. When I have questions, NH Hostas reply with helpful hints and encouragement almost immediately which amazes me since I am such a small time customer. I don't know if there are any other growers of hostas in my area, but I know that I would encourage others to try; hostas have become my friends and New Hampshire Hostas has helped me cultivate that friendship.
When one thinks of the geographic distance between the supplier and the grower in this case, it becomes obvious that the supplier is someone special. Thank you!

A few years ago I ordered my Hostapedia Book from NH Hostas. I had decided this year to give mail order a try. I was not disappointed. The plants were here in no time and packaged beautifully. All healthy, well marked and ready to plant. I will probably take a ride up to NH soon and visit!
Not only were the hostas that I ordered in perfect condition upon their arrival here in Illinois, but they were packaged fantastically. The plants were hearty and healthy. This was the first time I have ordered from this company, but it certainly will not be the last. I am very impressed with New Hampshire Hostas. I ordered a bunch of hostas from them this spring and the quality of their plants and the packaging was excellent.
I ordered seventeen plants and the shipping was only fourteen dollars. They arrived in a big heavy box, and each plant had been carefully mulched around the top of the pot with newspaper held down with rubber bands to hold the soil in place. They were neatly packed in layers with a ton of paper cushioning to keep them safe. They were all so healthy you'd think they hadn't just been shipped; not a single plant was fazed. They had tons of healthy roots and one variety bloomed the same week I put them in the ground.
One of the varieties I ordered turned out to be out of stock. They sent me an email asking what I would like them to do but I didn't get back to them, so they shipped my order with a substitute. Instead of 'longissima' they sent me 'longissima 'Manzo,'' the only difference being that this one had white stripes. Then I went to their website and saw the price. I had payed $8 a piece for the 'longissima,' but the 'longissima 'Manzo'' they sent was priced at $15 each on their website! There were five of those plants -and for each of them they sent a substitute of almost twice the value! You can see why I'm so impressed!
The plants were smaller and more expensive than the ones sold at the grocery store, but then the ones at the grocery store aren't named varieties. I imagine that once these plants are grown I'll be happy that I spent a little extra money to start with good stock.

I ordered 32 plants from New Hampshire host -- three kinds of host and a variety of other plants to complement them. This is the only place I have found that has such a great variety of plants sold as small plugs. I have a very large area to plant and cannot afford to pay the high prices charged locally for large plants, so I was grateful to find the N.H. site. The plants arrived very quickly, in excellent condition, and with clear instructions for keeping them healthy.
I was very impressed with the number of hostas this outfit offers. Their prices were reasonable, some of the special sale items were very appealing. My order arrived promptly via FedEx. The plants were carefully packed, the foliage in fine shape and the root stock was impressive. I would order more now but I have to make a hardwear cloth basket for every new plant due to an invasion of voles ( which is why I need to replace so many plants ).
This is the first time I ordered from this company. I received my hostas 4 days after I placed my order. I was VERY impressed with how they were packaged for shipping. The 3 hosta plants were carefully secured in their pots, with damp newspaper covering the top of the soil of each pot. They were carefully placed in the shipping box with protective paper and lots of damp newspaper strips. They arrived in fantastic shape. They were nice sized plants for the price. I probably have about 20 different varieties of hostas, most of them were purchased at a greenhouse in Stoughton, WI, which has over 200 varieties of hostas. For the 3 varieties I purchased, the prices were better at New Hampshire Hostas. I can't wait to get out and plant them tomorrow. They will make fantastic additions to my garden.

Website: Their website is a great resource. Their plants are listed by grouping (sun tolerance, size, color,etc) though I did find that some hostas were not listed in more than one category when they should have been. By all means use the search box for the name of the cultivar you are looking for if you don't find it in the group you first looked in. The shopping cart keeps your items for 7 days and allows you to see thumbnails. These are very big pluses with me. The about us and other necessary pages are easy to find and easy to navigate. They offer suggestions for planting companions and I appreciate that very much.
Communication: Richard was polite and quick to reply to my request to hold shipping off until my last expected frost date which was a full month after he thought. Know your date and communicate with them or you might get yours way too early! He was really agreeable to changing the date no problem. He emailed to tell me when my order was shipped and gave me a tracking number.
Shipping and packing: They used fed ex which I personally haven't had as much success with as UPS but I understand that my opinion is based upon many variables which can't be controlled by New Hampshire Hostas. The boxes did not seem damaged upon arrival and they were sealed and marked well. The plants were packed in a way that I did not expect, their 4 1/2 inch pots lying on their sides with either wads or grouped sheets of newspaper supporting and layering the pots. Each pot was wrapped in a plastic bag with a cinch or twist tie around the stems of the hosta to contain the soil. Moist newspaper was also placed on top of the soil in each container. Even at that, there was displaced soil in several of the containers, but not a big deal. I suspect it was the fact that they were lying on their sides that caused the soil to come out. Now, the biggest problem I had is that the foilage on almost every plant was damaged to some degree. The biggest problem is that the plants appeared to have been exposed to some frost judging from the tell-tale clear patches on the new growth and even some of the older growth. In my area, we had been blessed with several days in the 50s and 60s so it wasn't here that it happened. The baby plants that had only new terminal shoots were the most affected. In addition to the frost issue, several of the leaves were bent, creased, cracked and had rips due to the newspaper and the way they were lain in the box. I see that they get more plants in the box than the other order I placed with another company who sent the same amount of plants in two taller boxes, but it was definately at the expense of the foliage. Even the plants that had only tips suffered damage from the twist ties bearing down on the tips and causing rips in the tender foilage. But, one reason I love Hostas is the fact that they can take a beating and keep on going so I'm cool with some damage. I do not expect immediate gratification and I know as long as they don't die on me for some kooky reason, they'll be good year after year.
Plant condition: I've already mentioned the packing/shipping damage. That's really all there was wrong with the order. I didn't notice ANY bug activity which was impressive. The other company I ordered from had substantial damaging insect activity. These plants have been babied in my brightly lit bay window for several days now and they are doing fine but they are still bent and damaged. The clear patches from the cold damage are turning brown now. They'll be ok and I'll start to harden them off as soon as the conditions are right outside. Been doing this a long time so I don't have worries about their making it as long as there is no fatal unknown. Oh yes, every plant came with a tag. Thank you for that! I'm not THAT good that I know every new hosta by its new foliage.
Price: Well, I bought from this company partially based upon their good selection and their good prices. They have some really good deals on certain cultivars so it's worth looking carefully. Use the search box because it turns up more than their groups show. What really makes shopping here a good deal is the fact that they give bonus plants based upon your total order. You are not limited by plant, but by price of the plant. I am happy with the selection of bonus priced plants and I received two of them. Also, the shipping is 9.99 flat rate for your whole order. Even with a small order this is a fair deal. With a bigger order, it's a great deal, but keep in mind the way they pack things. Your going to get nice big pots and plants (I haven't checked the rootballs yet because the plants were stressed and I didn't want to put them through that) but they are bound to have some leaf damage because of the way they are layered on their sides in the box. Maybe this is why they can offer lower shipping. I ordered the same amount of hostas from another company and received two taller boxes and was charged about $30 but had absolutely no damage from shipping/packing. Just something to keep in mind.
Would I buy again? Yes, definitely. I might ask for a little later shipping date to avoid whatever cold snap happened between there and here though. The fact that they are damaged does not keep me from buying again because Hostas are tough, but it's something to keep in mind for those people that expect absolute perfection. And, maybe they will rethink how they pack stuff and come up with a way that will ensure less damage? No matter, I'll shop again. Thanks Richard.

I have ordered from New Hampshire Hostas several times before and have never been disappointed. This year's order arrived today and was no exception. Plants are all of a good size and are packed very well. There is nothing better to do on a cold January day than to browse their web site, fill up my cart, and tell them to deliver in mid-May! The only problem is in narrowing down what to order - they have such a great selection to choose from!
I ordered two hostas in March. Just rec'd them today (5/8), as I requested they wait until it was planting time in my state. They' healthy and beautiful and arrived in perfect condition. Instructions were included, too. Would order from this co. again and highly recommend it!
You cannot go wrong buying from this company. I have been ordering from New Hampshire Hostas for the past four or five years, possibly longer - I have so many hostas it's hard to be sure where they all came from. However, anything from NHH - every single order - I have received has been perfect - well packaged, generously sized plants, fast shipping, and the plants are always healthy - don't think I have ever lost one (other than to severe drought that we had a couple of years back and I just couldn't keep everything watered enough - but that was not their fault - it was mine). They have a great website - easy to navigate, fast and reasonable shipping, and their customer service is second to none! Definitely recommend them!

First of all I really, really enjoyed shopping on this web site. It's very user friendly lots and lots of pictures and categories and information. I put in the order on line and paid with credit card, easy. Then I realized I forgot one and it was the one that was on sale. SMH, I called NHH and Richard answered the phone and took care of the problem. :)
Well, I received some beautiful plants from 'New Hampshire Hostas', just what I've been wanting. These are large Hostas that are ready to go into the ground and get big. I was very impressed with the size of the plants, they are extremely healthy and they were in 4.5 inch pots and very well packed. I bought ten hostas and got free shipping over fifty dollars and I got the order in four days. Prices were very reasonable especially considering the size, they are all three or four year plants. I am very happy. I will post pictures of all the plants on the Host thread. Thank you very much !!

I was happy with my order over-all. The Great Expectations they sent was huge! There was another plant I considered to be a bit small but It all balanced out because of the extra large GE they sent. At first the plants were not in good shape, the packing was not as good as in the past and I had a big mess because the dirt feel out of the pots and the hosta's were slightly stressed out to put it mildly. However they did perk up rapidly after I repoted them and they are so very beautiful.
I did contact the company and was given a full refund, but by then the plants had perked up so well, that I just sent the check back. I really am happy with my order and since I did report the problem I believe it will be corrected quickly. :)

I loved the fall sale and I got 8 hostas that have been on my want list for a while and also got one that I already have because you really can't have too many 'June' hostas. Especially here in zone 8, they really tolerate heat well as with the others I ordered.
I put this order in late Sunday night and when I checked my email the next morning they had already shipped. Wow!! I got my box yesterday when I got home from work. Great packing, and still moist. I ordered 10 Hostas for my Hosta garden last year, and only 3 came back this year. It is my fault that I did not call them sooner, but today when I called with my concerns the representative cut me off and told me in no uncertain terms that it was NOT their product, and that he was sure of. I have never ordered Hostas online and will think twice before I do so again. I have many varieties in my garden that I have purchased and have been given to me from other gardener friends, so I do know how to grow them. These plants simply did not survive the winter, and not only did the company not back up their product, he was rude in handling my concerns. Lesson learned.
I found NH Hostas quiet by accident and was impressed with the number of Hostas available--much more choices than at a local nursery. I have order several times and all of the plants have arrived in a timely manner and have been very healthy upon arrival. I love looking at the different species and finding spots in my own yard for them.
